Don't forget the magic garlic!
Ah yes - the cure-all magic garlic. Tuskfish don't let this get out or alot of doctors will be put out of business.
Don't forget the magic garlic!
OK just my 2 cents... I wish there was a way to make people understand the difference between Ich management and Ich eradication. Ich management and everything it entails can work, but it comes with great risk. Meaning you might go months or even years and you're winning all the battles, but one day you might wake up to a tank full of dead/dying fish. Ich has won the war. Now, if you can live with that... Ich management might be for you.
Personally, I feel there are enough PITA things associated with this hobby - nuisance algae, dosing, fish fighting/nipping, etc. I don't care to add "battle fish parasites" to that list. So while QT and prophylactic treatment are not entirely without risk (nothing truly is), I sleep better at night knowing I won't wake up to Typhoid Mary running amuck in my DT. Let it happen in a QT with one or two fish; where I've got a fighting chance to defeat it.
Well said.
If you load up your feedings with garlic it does kill off ich. I hate removing fish from my display tank to put in my QT, it is very stressful on the fish. I have two hippos that have been added to my 125 & were stressed by a lunre wrasse. Soaking garlic into flakes & frozen foods has removed any trace of ich. I added them in perfect shape, after 2 days they had many spots of ich. I went up to the fish store picked up omega 1 flakes with garlic & garlic guard - 1 day later, gone. The color of these 2 look amazing to. All the fish in the tank eat this stuff like they haven't eaten in 2 weeks & I feed them 4-5 times a day (Power feeding). Garlic really does work.
Maybe others will tell you otherwise but it worked perfect for me. I now feed all my fish with garlic, not every feeding but at least 1-2 times a day. If you have a smaller tank just make sure you don't over garlic.
They made a similar post in the reef fishes forum on another very old thread revival. Just when I though the summer postings may be dull.
Sorry, but there is no empirical evidence that garlic has any effect on Cryptocaryon.
Whether there is documented evidence or not I am sharing my experience. I have read tons of reviews from many other people endorsing garlic supplements (garlic guard, Xtreme). It might work for some, might not. I only posted it up because I know tons of people have this issue with tangs & this may help. Personally I like trying methods like this, don't have to put meds in the tank or stress a fish out by removing them from the display tank & putting them in QT.
Removing a fish from my tank is next to impossible without removing most of the live rock which stresses every fish out so I avoid it. Paying $10 for some garlic guard & waiting a couple of days to see if it works before ripping apart your tank is worth it.
I'll take stirring the pot for 200 Alex.
