My brain hurts!

I bought this coral a month or so ago for a steal at $20. I placed it on the sand bed and all was well for a while. One morning I noticed that one corner was partially buried under the sand. Not being one to quickly grab or move corals once placed, I let it go figuring it would take care of itself shortly. After a few days buried, I finally reached in and "helped him out". To my dismay this beautiful little gem had some receding tissue. It has been about two weeks now and I have not seen any change, either good or bad. My question is has anyone experienced anything similar? I know it's not a brown jelly infection I've seen those in the past. Will he repair himself and cover his skeleton given enough time?

if its not receeding anymore it may repair itself but will most likely go on living without reparing the affected area. I've had them eventually grow over the "dead" area but only at their regular growth rate. If any algea starts to grow on the skeleton, a blast of water from a turkey baster is a nice passive way to clean it off.
