My chocolate chip starfish are dying...

I have had 4 chocolate chips stars for almost a year and suddenly they are turning white and chalky at the ends of their "arms" and eventually dying. What could be happening to them?

If they are all doing it sounds like something is in the water.

Sure sounds like the whole thing is dying. Water quality (numbers) if you can post them.

I wonder if it's staving. Not many tanks have enough food for them to live off of.

I had a chocolate chip star for over a year in two tanks (12g nanocube and 29gallon) and feeding was never an issue. Unfortunately it got sucked up into my powerhead and couldn't free itself... and died when I pulled him off it.
