My custom 233

I got in touch with a local Tank builder, Oceans By Design to build me a new tank. 72" x 30" x 25" with 1/2" glass.
It's going to be a soft coral and lps tank.

Starfire glass on the front panel and right side glass.

Here are the plans.

A few supplies I've picked up.
Going to use a Reeflo Snapper/Dart Hybrid for a closed loop and a Eheim 1262 as a return pump.

i don't want to be a downer… but those ball valves with the red handle suck initially because they are stiff, but suck even worse later on because they will get to where they don't even turn….

if you look into a "Spears Economy" ball valve (they have a blue handle) they work 100000X better and are smooth as glass every time i have ever had to adjust one… new or used.

Yeah, I agree about those ball valves.
I've been searching for a lube that I could use that would loosen them up, but found nothing.
So yesterday while at Lowes, I looked at the ones they had ( black handle).
They turned normally, so I bought 7 new ones.

Looking good!

Oceans by Design actually built my tank for me last year, rimless 48x48x20, and I am quite pleased with it. I am a little jealous though, as when they built my tank they refused to do an external overflow stating that there was not enough to support it on the back of the tank.

Good luck, I will be following along.

Thanks.
Yeah when I talked to Ocean By Design ( Mike) about the external overflow I had to reassure him that I would support the plumbing with good clamps.

Got the hole in the house ready to bring it in.

Not going to try and squeeze this one in the front door.

On my last tank I used Tunze 6105's with a 7095 controller, but I'm going to try and get away from the powerheads in the tank.
So I picked up a Reef Keeper Lite to control my pumps. The reeflo and the ehiem.
I want to be able to set up a feed timer.
I don't need a controller for my lights, I have 3 gen 1 Radions and they have there own great controls.

Then on Sunday I did a little of the plumbing.
Debated on whether to use double 45's or a single 90.
Did some searches here on RC and used the flow calculator and figure there really isn't much difference. I think it was maybe 1-1/2% difference.

Looking good!

What are you stocking plans for the tank, if you don't mind me asking?

Are there decent LFS's in the Olympia area? I am in Yakima where my only, local option is Petco...

There are no decent stores in the Olympia area.
I have to drive atleast 50 miles for the closest which is Oceans By Design.
Then another 10 miles to Barrier Reef.
Then another 5 miles to Saltwater City.

All of the stuff I had in my 240 before it started leaking is going in the new tank.
Mostly softies and some LPS. Atleast the stuff that survived the crash in my holding container.
Lost a very large green sinularia, all my lps. One frogspawn was the size of a basketball.
All the mushrooms.
So I will have lots of room.
I'm going to try and put much less rock in this tank.

I'm tempted to go more lps in this one too.
Not sure what, just some with color.
Doesn't have to be the hot flavor of the month stuff.

I finally was able to do a freshwater test the other day.
Filled the tank and sump with water and turned on the pumps.

I went around my tank 2 or 3 times checking for unglued fittings, looking at the couple of hose clamps, making sure they were tight, bulkheads, screwed fittings, etc.
So I figured everything was cool.
After the tank was full and running for a half hour or so, everything seem stable, I made a cheeseburger run.
Was gone maybe 25 minutes. Sat down and ate my lunch.
Went over to the tank to check again for leaks and saw a little water on the floor directly underneath the manifold end cap.
So I reached down to see if I could feel water dripping from it and I even gave it a little pull.
I did this while the Reeflo Snapper/Dart pump is running.
The cap started to move a hair, then all of a sudden it tried to come off completely, with a lot of pressure.
There was a actual brief moment of panic.
I was lucky that I was able to push it back on and run around to the other end and shut off the pump.
If it would have come off, it would have been like a charged firehose blowing water out.

Sorry, a severe case of schadenfreude makes me want to ask you to film yourself the next time you do something like that. Yes, I know. I'm bad.
