my diy chiller (LOL)

hi all i messed up my neck and im home board so i thought i post my diy chiller(it really works) but must be prepaired 24hrs in advance lol ok the items you need is-
1.a big ziplock bag i think a gallon one.
2.about 1gallon of ro water.
3.a freezer.
of now for instructions.
1.open ziplock bag.
2.pour water in bag.
3.zip the bag up tight.
4.place in freezer for 24hours.
5.take it out place it in the sump and put your heater where you want the tank water to stay at.
6. relax grab the remote and a sprite and enjoy your tank.
i did this because my tank went up to 88 the ice kept me tank at 85 from like 9 in the morning till 8pm when i turned off my lights
so if you cant afford a chiller right now this is the best way to keep things kool without turning off your lights.also the temp dosent just drop really fast it goes down like 1 degree every 10-15 minutesor so . tell me what you guys think lol

Adrian, That is a good method of bringing the temperature down in an emergency situation, however if you want something a little more long term try placing a fan on the tank or sump in such way that it blows air across the water surface this will naturally increase the evaporation thus lowering the temperature significantly.
I have two tanks that I keep the temperature exclusively with fans at 79 degrees.

I agree....
I have 2 x 250w MH SE on my 65g tank. With a small fan blowing across the surface of the water the tamp stays at 78-80 degrees at the most, but without the fan the temp easily goes to 85-86 degrees and probably higher.
When I did my tank switch I tested it, to see if I would need something stronger than a fan. A small fan could do wonders with temp control.
The only downside I have had is the water evaporation is high, but with a simple topoff set-up that was taken care of also.

Same here as well, my tank will never go over 81 degrees unless there is a power outage. 2 x 4" fans help cool down my tank in my sump area, it takes a little bit of time... 30 mins or so but it works.

LouPhoenix thanks, i wasn't sure about them until you said very quiet so i just ordered two from Drfostersmith.com they have them on sale. i am going to place one each centered to push the heat from the 250w HM lights out into the living room.

that is a nice looking fan! they look like low voltage too so it could probably be useful in case of power outage during hurricane season powered with a battery/power inverter device.
I use a small blower type fan from Lowe's

what is the ambient room temperature where you keep your tank at where you can have fans running on a MH light and keep the tank at 79 degrees?

thanks

If you are talking to me....
The room temp is 75 with the A/C on. Then when the A/C is off the room temp goes to the high 80's or low 90's. Right now the fan is blow across the surface of the tank itself....I have not set-up a sump/refigium yet.

thanks reddawg, my wife freezes at anything below 79 degrees. i was hot at first but now i'm used to it. typically i run mine no lower than 78 degrees cause she'll start to grab the blankets, and sweater. it's hell trying to keep my tank cool with just fans. i aim my ac duct work right into the tank.

what is with these women? can't they see we're trying to keep these corals happy!!!!:D :D :D

id suggest to everyone freezing some bags of water, if you can spare freezer space, for unforseen events to the tank. It will save your butt in an emergency.
