Hello all,
I just recently purchased an elegance coral and have been keeping a close eye on it. I know of the rumors and bad experiences that a lot of people have had with them and so I thought maybe this could help. I posted the original on a different site but I had a few suggestions to post it here so I figured if I could even help 1 person with an elegance it would be worth it. I am by no means an expert, I am just an amateur 24 year old reefer that has had a very good experience with my elegance so far. Ok after bringing the elegance home and acclimating it for 3 hours or so I placed it in the bottom of my tank in a tupperware container. I chose to use a tupperware container because it shielded the elegance a little from the current, it also allowed me to move it around with touching the coral which is important when trying to find a good area with the right amount of light, and it also allowed the elegance to expand on the sand I placed in the container and the plastic which is a lot more smoother than any rock surface. Ok so the place where I initially placed the Elegance was pretty close to being under one of my MH's. After about 3 hours under the light it looked like this:
I was not happy with its overall appearance so I moved the coral away from the lights and towards the lowest flow/lighted area in the tank i have. This still isnt the most dimmest of areas but it certainly wasnt like being right underneath the MH. This is what it looked like after another hour moved away from the MH:
Another hour:
So I felt as if its expansion was due to the reduction in lighting it was receiving. Remember I am no expert but this is what I witnessed. I also rearranged the rocks a bit to cut down on the flow in this part of the tank but not too much where detritus would build up all over because my tank is bare bottom. I continued to check on it at hour intervals.
To give ya an idea of my tank heres a few pics. Sorry Im not a great photographer.
As you can see in the one picture its by far not dim in the corner that it is in, I just think there may be a fine line between too much light and too little. Least thats my opinion. After a while being in the same spot I can now say that tomorrow I need to buy a bigger tupperware container...
It has been a very short thread in terms of the original post but I think its just more to the point. Any advice/suggestions/comments are always appreciated
Oh you all may wonder what is up with the bottle remainders in the tank. I replumbed the tank and ended up with way more flow than before. The clams didnt like it all so I used the leftovers to make shields from the current for them. I will most likely redo the rocks or figure out another solution but for now im going to leave them because I dont want to disturb the tank any more for a while.
