My fathers clowns have started laying eggs!

Trying again
Well today I went to my fathers to see him, and I decided to look at his tank and to my surprise I found them protecting there eggs! IDK how many times they've layed now because I haven't been to his house for months. But now that they are laying eggs. I'd like to try and get some little nemos out of it! lol. I know its a fairly tough process but just have a few questions that i'm hoping could be answered here. I guess I'll just list them off here

1. ABOUT how much would it cost in equipment to setup tanks and things to grow the babies??

2. What kind of equipment will I need? (tanks, heaters, other little odds and ends)

3. Is there any one site that just has a surplus of information of breeding the clowns??

Thats all I can think of now... Still deciding on wether I can afford to try and if I really want to. (I work at home so I'll be able to take care of it)

i'm not sure but here's an idea
tank- 10-30 gallon
filter- sponge filter so babies don't get sucked up
light- standard light that comes with tank
heater- visi therm or whichever you find best
i don't think you will need decorations unless when they grow out you want them to live there. when you say raise you mean grow them then sell them and them get more eggs and repeat the process right? not a permanent home for them right?

hers a bunch of links

Yes Joyce's book is a must. Read through it to decide if you want to take on the project. If so you will find a lot of help in this forum. There is no rush, they will keep spawning and get a little better at it each time. The web is nice but that book is required reading.

I gotta chime in and voice my choice - I finally broke down and got both Joyce's book and Hoff's book - read them both in record time. Out of the two, Joyce's book is definitely geared towards the first-timer / aspiring clownfish breeder. Hoff's book takes things to an entirely higher level. Start with Joyce.

FWIW, having your first baby clownfish with their first stripes is like nothing else...sure my mandarins spawn, but for once I actually have RAISED something I know will live (vs. die off somewhere between 1 and 45 days ;) )

Good luck!

Yeh, I just want to raise them and then sell them... I'm not in it for the money, would just love the feeling of accomplishment after completely raising them. I'd probably keep one for myself just cause I'd love to have one also... lol I'm going to get that book and see what I think. Do you guys think its "simple" like I'll be succesful on my first try if I have patience or will this not happen for a WHILE?

I'm not in it for the money

There's money in this ??? When does that start

There is a learning curve, yes it's pretty simple and many have a good run on their first try, but there are so many possible mistakes to make... you have to have some patience and remember that you will have another shot every 12 days or so. I think my first success I got something like 30 through met, what a rush that was :D Now if I'm down to 30 I pretty much just let them go..., you get better with practice ;)

Congrats on the eggs! You'll need to be succesful raising algae and rotifers and BBS before you'll be successful raising clowns. Good Luck!

Simple it is NOT. It is complicated.

Learning how to do it is not easy.

Like anything else, once you know how to do it, it is easy.

Just an example from my very recent experience....Batch 1 thru 3 total loss due to lack for food cultures going...well batch 3 was actually due to my stupidity...batch 4 has 13 survivors at 13 days and 55-60 out of batch 5 at day 4 so far....I try to leave my ego out of it and except the fact that I know very little:)

THE MORE YOU LEARN, THE MORE YOU REALIZE HOW LITTLE YOU KNOW!!!!
I'm learning everyday, And I think most others are as well.
Carl Best of luck
