My first anemone (BTA)

I thought I would share my experience with my first BTA. I figure someone else who gets their first anemone one day might read this and learn something from it or be able to compare it to their new anemone as well.

My tank is a 29g with a 20g sump. My light fixture is a reefbreeders value led currently set around 35-40% whites and 30% blues. The tank has been set up now for around 4 months. I've had over a year of experience with this reef tank and have done plenty of research on anemones to the point where I felt comfortable buying a BTA.

The nem I bought was on sale at an LFS for 50% off, a lot of the nems were in really bad shape but the one I picked was one of the best looking ones left. Now for some pictures...

When I first started acclimating him. I temp acclimated for 15-30 min then drip acclimated for around an hour or so I believe...

You can see some of the waste that was in the bag in the picture. Other than the waste, his tentacles seemed pretty well formed. Unfortunately, when I bought him, I couldn't get a good look at his mouth so I did take a risk.

Once in the tank, he inflated quite nicely. I placed him under an overhang in my aquascape. I figured he could start off in a shaded area and then move around as he gets acclimated to my lighting.

These are some pictures of how he looks during the daytime now, about 12 days or so after introduction to the tank.

I'm not sure if he is splitting, but he does seem pretty healthy. If he does end up splitting, awesome, if not, I don't mind. I have tried spot feeding him once or twice so far, but he didn't seem interested. The food did not seem to stick to his tentacles either. However, I know that BTAs do not NEED to be fed, so this doesn't concern me too much.

Over the past 2 weeks, he hasn't moved at all from the initial area I set him in under the overhang. I'm still paranoid and cover my mp10 and turn off my koralia every night when I'm not near the tank and will probably do so for a month or two, just to be safe.

The BTA does deflate fairly often, at least once a day for several hours at a time. Usually around 4-5 pm I see him deflated and he will reinflate during the night time after the lights have turned off. If you're curious, my whites run from 11-8 pm and blues run 10-9ish. Sometimes when he deflates, his mouth is gaping, but during the day I have never noticed his mouth gaping, always closed well. I imagine him deflating this often will eventually subside, so I'm not too concerned about it. Here's an attempt at taking a pic of him retracted into his crevice today.

I'll try and update this thread every so often, again so newer BTA owners can compare their experiences with mine maybe. I'm also open to any suggestions, advice, etc. Thanks for checking it out!

Looks like it is in pretty good shape.
Good luck wth it.
Anemones can be addicting.
Thanks for sharing.

looks very bleached, imo. i hope it pulls through and does well for you. personally, i won't buy bleached nems any more. some pull through, and some don't. i would rather pay a few more bucks and get one with a higher chance of making it, preferably an aqua cultured one.

what did you try spot feeding it? i rotate between mysis and chopped krill. just very small amounts like the size of it's mouth. ime, larger meals just get spit back out.

you are wise to acclimate the bta to the led's. i have photons on a couple of my tanks. i started out way to high on my bta tank. lol

keep us posted.

Thanks. I'm not sure if he is bleached or how much for that matter. It may just be the bad quality of the cellphone picture. I've tried spot feeding him Rod's herbivore mix (some meaty pieces in it) as well as some Rods coral blend. The coral blend I tried for the first time today. His tentacles appeared sticky as the coral blend did not roll off. However, he did not pull the food into his mouth. I'll probably go out and buy some meaty food like mysis and try again in a week or so just to see if it will help him color up any more.

As long as it has some color it should do ok. But bleached ones are hard to keep alive.
I'm 1for3 on bleached btas. The more bleached it is the more important it is to feed it if possible. If it has plenty of color then feeding isn't necessary.

Today I noticed the anemone stayed deflated in the rock work all day. I looked closely at it tonight and noticed something on his foot. They look like little white bubbles, my guess is that they are tears in his foot. Not too sure how he would've gotten such tears, as the foot seemed healthy when I first got him. Here are the pictures

From what I've read, BTAs can be pretty hardy and most will heal from a tear. So I'm planning on just keeping a close eye on him and hopefully it heals up.

Well, he has been inflating fine on and off for the past few days. Just recently it has appeared he's on the move. Here's a goofy pic of him upside down trying to figure out how to get out of the crevice he's in...

He's moved onto the sandbed now, looking like a hot mess there but i'll resist the urge to move him myself

anything new to report on your anemone (BTA)? is it better?

Thanks for checking in. To conclude this thread, the anemone did pass away. When he went onto the sand bed, he stayed in the same location for a day or two. He was not at the point where he was completely disintegrating (pieces falling off) but he did appear to be too far gone at that point. When I removed him, he had a hole where his mouth would be that went straight through his body (you could see through the hole to the other side). It was definitely a learning experience and ideally I would have chosen a healthier nem as my first.

My next one will without a doubt be from a reputable lfs nearby and the anemone will be much healthier at the time of purchase. I'll probably wait a few months before trying another. I plan to begin dosing soon and want to get that all sorted out first.

Hopefully someone somewhere will learn more about anemones through this thread when they google info! Thanks to all who read and helped.

So, I've just purchased a new BTA from a reputable LFS last week and I'm happy to say it's doing much better than my previous. He seems to like the spot he's in, hasn't moved at all and has his foot way down into the rock. It deflates at night usually and then in the morning when the actinics turn on, he starts to inflate. Here are some pictures to show how he's doing after about a week....
