My first nem ended in disaster

Fishy 1

The Reefer From Downunder
Yesterday I got my first nem, a GBTA. I put her on a rock and she attached herself to it and looked happy for the rest of the day. I went to bed and woke up this morning to find the water very cloudy, I couldn't see the nem and then I saw pieces of it all around the tank:( she'd obviously gone to find a new spot and got sucked into the wp25 and got minced.

Have you guys had similar experiences with nem's and powerhead. If so please share what happened and what do you do to stop it happening again?

Anemone purée is all to common I'm sorry to say. Only foolproof way is to not have a powerhead. Absent that, probably a good idea to not run the powerhead until the anemone has established itself.

Some powerheads have foam covers available ( Ecotech) I also don't run my MP60s at night when it is more common for the BTAs to move

+1. I go as far putting a piece of live rock in a bucket for anemone to attach itself while it's being drip acclimated for 1.5 hours. No guarantee it won't move but can work successfully.

I don't think there is anything you can do. The nem will keep moving until it's happy. Fortunately for me, my first nem found a spot very quickly and haven't moved since.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll definitely turn the powerheads off when I get another one.

Just bear in mind that once you turn the powerheads back on, that change in conditions (i.e. change in flow) may prompt the BTA to move. Hopefully, even if it does move, it will just move along the rocks rather than fully detaching

I have made anemone soup 3-4 times before... and yes it sux and yes it happens... sometimes you luck out and they don't jump in the blender...

I have never had one go through the power head but had one float around and then attach to the power head thankfully it was lights out and they were on low, that being said I have always tried to add my nems later if possible (close to lights off) and turn circulation off or down, let them settle then slowly ramp circulation back up over a couple of days. Again no guarantee but it's helped in my tanks
