My first saltwater fish are in quarantine

I'm quarantining fish for the first time. There are four blue green reef chromis in a ten gallon with a sponge filter. My ammonia level is somewhere between 0 and .25ppm. The fish have been in there for about 5 days and are eating well and hiding but off the bottom. They come out and explore during feeding time. I don't see any signs of ich or any other obvious signs of disease. Two of them seem to be missing some scales and have slightly dark colored fins. Is this a sign of marine velvet? I don't want to start treating with copper until I know for sure what that have, if anything. I have seen some weird stringy white poop. Any other symptoms I should look for to diagnose this? I'll try and get some pictures if I can figure out why all my uploads keep failing. Thanks for helping out a first time reefer!

ammonia should be zero. missing scales and dark colored fins are not signs of marine velvet. but i've read chromis are susceptible to uronema marinum. stringy white poops could be a sign of internal parasite. you could use prazipro for that.

Your pictures are probably too large. Use Microsoft Paint to resize them to 50% the save and try and repost.

I suggest you go to the disease forum and start reading. If you answer this post one more time you can go to the disease forum and post a thread with your pictures on it. I wish you good luck with your fish.

Congrats on your first fish and starting out right with QT.
For pictures, you can also get a photobucket account and link to it
Do some reading, and post some pics so folks can get you better advice.

Thanks everyone. I've been doing water changes and using prime to control ammonia as best as I can. Right after I turned the light on this morning one of the fish started swimming slow circles on the bottom out in the open. That was a little strange.

I use the option to take pictures with my phone under the manage attachments tab. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I would suggest adding an inexpensive filtration system. I use a sponge filter along with an Aqua Clear 30 on a 20g QT. Inexpensive filtration that works great. I also use Dr. Tims One and Only as this works great with keeping parameters in check. Make sure to top off with RODI regularly.

Treat with PraziPro. Very simple and relatively safe. Do a water change first. Then remove carbon from the filter. Then put prazi in per instructions and leave in 5-7 days with no water changes if you can. feed very lightly as you only have a 10 gallon. After 5-7 days do a water change and put carbon back in. I only use copper if I see definite signs of ich.

I've had great success quarantining this way.

I have a sponge filter on it. I like the suggestion of using a hang on filter too. I run an Aqua Clear 30 on a freshwater tank and like it.

I'm considering picking up some PraziPro after work tonight.

Minimum should be 4 weeks. If all goes well I put into the DT at the end of a 4 week QT. If diseases are being combatted obviously longer. I've had one outbreak of ich during QT. Came at 2nd week. Treated with Coppersafe and once cleared started the 4 weeks over. Many will say at least 72 days and that's good advice, but I was successful in how I did it.
