i know it's not recomended to start with a small tank, but until i start the 180g(ways off) a 10g will have to do. let me give you the plan. it will be a softie tank, with medium low light in the beginning. i will have 2 powerheads(not sure what type, but good enough for the tank size) they will be equiped with sponges to help with mechanical filtration.

i will be making a refugium later on(a week or so later) that is fed by a powerhead, and then drains into the tank. it will be around 4-5g.

i have a top fin HOB heater that will do until i replace it.

as for lighting, while it cycles, it will be using a 20watt 18,00k bulb. i might go further into PC.

i pick up the tank and some supplies tommorow, and then the rock on friday. i am not sure where the family digital camera is, but hen i find it, pics for sure

Sounds good.

I started with a 3 gallon, so don't feel bad.

I wouldn't use sponge filters on the powerheads. Maybe they will contribute to mechanical filtration, but they will also crud up with detritus and let stuff rot on them until you have time to clean them. As the pump sponges fill up with gunk, they will slow down and your flow will change. Let the rock take care of filtration. As long as you keep the fish load low, you shouldn't have a problem.

Sloth, i relize it would slow down the flow, but i have heard of people's shrimp and snails getting stuck on powerheads. if i do use sponges, i'll rinse them every 2 days.

i think i'll probably end up turning a powerfilter into a HOB refugium.

also, who uses N.O. fluerescent lights on their nanos? i would love to not use PC lighting. is there any coral that's easy to keep that doesn't require light? or at least low intensity? i can feed them as often as i need.

you can try a sun coral, they don't use light at all, but you do have to target feed each polyp. Here is a pic of my 10 gal before i took it down last week. The orange coral is the sun. I had 40 watts PC 50/50 over this tank.
