My fish keeps dying!

One fish

In Memoriam
why? i set up a biocube. the salinity is 1.024. My fish was in there for maybe 24 hours and then died. i checked the water. ammonia is 0. nitrite is 0. and nitrate is 40. what is going on? i got another fish. because i didn't find anything wrong with the water. It lasted 3 days. It is cycled i thought. It was cycled about 2 months now?

Need more info. How did you acclimate the fish? Do you have a quarantine procedure? Can you describe your tank set-up? What fish did you add, etc.

A slow acclimation [one that lasts over 30 minutes] can be lethal, [ammonia poisoning] and it takes as long as 3 days for the fish to die.

Sk8r is very right! Lfs salinity that the fish was in and current tank salinity must match before transferring. Thus a QT is a good idea. There is stickies here that cover acclamation and proper Qt procedures.

Also, how long did the LFS have it before you bought it? It may have been stressed from shipping and never recovered. I have seen dead/dying fish in LFS tanks and never buy unless I see them eat first.
