My freaken yellow tang keep nipping on my 5 inch tear drop. I'm beginning to be a little worried. Actually, a lot. What should I do? Is the clam gonna stresss out and die? Man............
Is kind'a like the clam is scare to open now. It won't open all the way and everytime the yellow would get close to it, it would just close up. Is this normal, I never heard of yellow tang harrassing clam, I guess I believe it now.
i heard it and i guess it is somewhat true.. keep an eye.. my clam reacts to shadow, so any fish and perhaps the tang itself make it seem like it reacts.. but i think a clam that reacts = a clam that's healthy.. but mine opens back up almost instantly, perhaps because no real physical damage is done..
just keep an eye.. maybe w/ time and if u fee the tang more it wont harass it..
My advise is to get rid of the tang, or place some physical barrier on the clam(clear plastic or netting with lots of hole for flow and light to go through). Once the tang weakens the clam it will become more palatable and tang will pick on it more. Death will ensue
This is based on previous personal experience. I had a tiny hippo tang that started picking on a large maxima. The stress of the event made it eventually shrink more eventually it died. I had a common cleaner pick on a small crocea until it shrivelled up. Got rid of it and now it recovered and is thriving.
Do not wait too long or you will end up with a dead clam.
I read that tangs can start nipping at clams because they are natural grazers. But on the other hand I have a yellow tang with my maxima with no prob's (yet).
IMO- just like an angel fish once they get a taste for something, they probably won't stop trying it.
