Lighting is not your problem, more light = more faster growth. I've kept them as close as ten inches from three 250 watt 10k halides with vho atinics totaling 1182 watts. they grew like mad sending out leafs of star polyps everywhere. I work up here at AquaCorals in Maine and the owner is having the same rapid growth under the same very intense halide/vho lighting. Without knowing anything else about your tank I would say is might be a water quality issue. The only two things i have ever had make green star polyps loose their bright color is excess nutrients and not enough light. Just the experience shared by myself and the aquaculture facility I work at. Some more info about your tank and system would help to determine what the cause is.
