the last two pics are of my first clam which i thought to be a H. hippopus but now i think its a H. porcellanus?, it looks to have to short of a shell to be a H. hippopus(compared to my new ones)

what do you all think?

i thought i would of had a reply by now with all the clam experts on here??

oh well i need to get some patience i guess(i feel antsy)

H. Hippopus and H Porcellanus are almost identical.H.Hippopus is as far as i know the only Hippopus clam available in the hobby.H.Porcellanus is much more rare, and I've never seen it for sale.H.P has a fringed incurrent syphon, where H.H doesn't,also H.H has a smoother shell.thats about all i can tell you for now .if you can get a very close up pic of the clam from every angle then maybe I can tell for sure.

Look at the incurrent opening. Hip. P has fingers in it like Tridacna Derasea. and Hip. H dosn't, like tridacna Gigas. Hope this helps, Paul

those are the best pics i have

it doesnt have the tentacle things on the in syphon, also it doesnt have the red stripe colors in the shell?(which i know H.H. have)

thanks

Wow either I am lucky enough to be here, or their prices are REALLY high. I have once seen a Hippopus for sale here in Gainesville.. ended up selling for something like 20 bucks to a friend of mine. The other clams are almost double to triple what they are here... and whats scary is that I don't think those prices include shipping...

Gainsville doesn't have much to offer in the way of clams, and I think $60 is pretty high for a non-descript tiny gold max.Let me know where you find cheap clams.
I think Sedar is a little over the top on most of his clam prices, but he has some unique selections, and all are quarantined and healthy before they ship.Shipping is not included.

i got my 2 hippopus at a special low price, lets just say it was cheaper than 20.00/ea.

if you come to the ohio frag swap he will have them at a lower price then

FWIW

huh? Where did you go Rothie? Most of the clams I see are arounf 45-59 bucks tops (croceas in general). Lately the Derasa started picking up on price.. but the big ones seem to stay at the same price.
