My house repair finally started

Hi y'all,

The house repair finally started today. I was told that they will be replacing some sheet rocks besides replacing a section of the roof and the structure underneath.

They sealed off the room my tank is in very well and gave me a good access way. They even put a screen up near the tank to further protect it from dust that may seep in.

However, the temperature of the room went up really high due to the very limited circulation. The tank temp was about 85 degrees. Fish and corals are looking okay at the moment. The vents are not effective when the doorway is completely closed off. I reset the timer tonight to reduce the light period to just 4 hours. I also opened up the vinyl seals on the door way temporarily and set up a small fan to blow the cool air in. I am afraid that I have to do this when the workmen are out of the house every day for a while.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me so that the repair will go well and be finished in a short time. If my acroporas start looking stressed, I may call on some of you to temporarily hold them for me...

Tomoko, if reducing the photo period doesn't help, you might could try and find a window unit or portable A/C to help keep the room cool. I'm not suggesting buy a new unit, but maybe if someone has one you could borrow.

Thanks. We are okay so far.

Kids are making fuss about having to stay out of their rooms upstairs. Well, tough! I told them that tney needed to bring down what they need yesterday. This is probably the worst of it right now. Good thing fish and corals don't nag at their keepers. I'd go bonkers.

Thanks for the window unit idea, but knowing my neighborhood association, I can pretty much guarantee that they will immediately send me a nastygram since the tank is in my front room unfortunately. I saw this morning that the workman had closed the vents for the room actually. I opened up one of them which I had an access to. I will probably put a filter media over it and see if it can operate without any problem.

Thank you, Nicole. I have to look into that! The room faces west and the big windows make the room very warm in the afternoon. I always have blinds closed, but the room gets unbearable to some people (not to me - I usually freeze in offices and restaurants.)

They do care about my tank. When the workers came, I made a point of turning the light on. They were very much intregued with my pink plague (pom pom xenia) and a pair of clown fish (Ahh, Nimo!!!) They did not want anything happened to these guys for sure. They sealed the room against the dust and paint fume really well (almost too well :) lol.)

At least it sounds as if your contractor and crew are trying to be diligent about keeping your tank safe.

Oops sorry -- I was having RC issues and came back later to post.. but how did half a post make it? Strange.

Tomoko why not change your lighting period to later in the day.. or even at night..Or I guess you could do Very early morning.. My lights don't even cut on till 3pm then off at 11pm.. I don't do this cause of high temps. I just rather the tanks be on while I'm at home not at work.. I do have an Extra window AC that I just use in my shop sometimes.. But your probably right about your neighborhood association would probably beat your door down the very first day..

It's already set for the night time :)

I have been wondering when the police kicks our door down for having the blue light shining through the blinds, or the 65K light for the phyto at another window ;) I don't have to worry about my reefer friends not able to find my house at night, though. I know you guys can see the blue glow way over from County Line Road at night :D

Get 8ball to rig up a robotic arm that dips a bag of ice into the tank during the peak temperature times. :D

I've seen what he can do....it will be a piece of cake!

Seriously though, sorry to hear of your troubles and I hope your tanks make it through okay.

You can probably rent one of those portable AC units at the local home depot or idustrial supply store. Might even get the insurance to offset the cost. Just a thought. Of course a small one room window AC would only run you the cost of a couple days rental probably. If I had a loner you would be welcomed to it.

And my work got delayed -- but probably not a lot of dust and stuff with mine, and it will be on the other side of the house.

Ya'll didn't want a floor in the whole house for the June meeting, did you?

two to three weeks, ouch. =/
I just noticed you're local, as long as this cool weather sticks around, then maybe a window fan will do the trick. You could use the time to slowly shorten the daylight cycle to whatever you feel safe using. I've gone as low as four hours/day for two weeks.
did a google search and ran into:

Maybe the neighborhood association wouldn't mind this as much, since it's not a big ugly box hanging out of the window, or you could run the vent into the house and transfer the load to your main AC. Whatever you put in the room will have to have a way to vent heat outside the room, however. Thermodynamics and all that, lol.

*edit*
I wouldn't go that short with acros though =/

Last night I had my window open to let the cool air in. I did not really consider how dry it has been. Since my auto top off container was empty (this should have clued me in), I topped off the tank with what I had in a separate container. It was a bit short, but I thought I'd be fine till the morning. After all the temp was low....

Well, the tank evaporated like 10 to 12 gallons in 6 hours with a fan running at a full speed. When I checked on the tank at 6:00 am, my mag drive was making a loud noise and the sump was almost dry :eek2: I ended up topping off all the water I made through the night and slowed down the fan.

With all the scaffolding and screens between me and my tank, I am having heck of a time carrying buckets and buckets of water over to the tank :( I am going to Lowes this afternoon to buy a long flex tube. I am hoping my small pump (200 gph) is strong enough to send the water over 25 - 30 feet.
