My humble 270 gallon!

lost in it all

New member
Just to start I have not been keeping saltwater tanks to long but when I first set up my 55 gallon I new I would be going bigger! I had a 150 48x24x30 and did not like how deep the tank is so I found a 270 that is only 24 inches deep. here is the start with the stand needing skin.

Aquscaping Looks sick!! Great job on the stand and it looks like you are off to a great start!! What kind of substrate is that in the picture?

Thanks the aquascaping isn't done yet I have to decide how much of my live rock is going to go into the display and how much is going in the sump. The substrate is from caribia sea I think its called puka shell its larger pieces and small shells mixed. I am using it to help keep my black sand down out of the water colum.

Thank you everyone it took us an hour or so just choosing and picking which rocks to put where. the ro/di just got done yesterday and I got to do a few test runs. Right now I have two 1 inch sea swirls hooked up to the returns, and one hydor 7 in the tank for circulation for now i will be looking at either another hydor 8 or tunze 6105 not sure yet I do really like the hydor's for the price. Here is a picture from last night.

And for lighting right now I have two ice cap pendants that are able to change between 250 and 400 watt DE hallide bulbs I am just going to use my ice cap 250 ballast for now but I need to decide if I want to get some supplements or go to a 20,000k 400 watt bulb any suggestions?

Well when changing over the sand from the 150 gallon to the 270 I forgot about the leapord wrasse, and he got put in the 270 right away and I have not seen him since :( I really liked that fish so hopefully didn't lose him

found my wrasse last night what a relief.. here is a picture from a couple hours ago I hve 14,000k 250 bulbs right now. not sure what I am thinking about them yet.

I would suggest getting suppliment lighting rather than upping to 400w...you can see that those pendants create a bit of a spotlight, which some additional lighting will spread out more. By doing this you can also control the coloring better. Get a couple of retrofit T5HO's, maybe two on each side and then you can spread the light better.

Just my 2 cents though. Overall, this is looking like a really nice build.

Did the leopard wrasse make it ok? Is the tank cycled?

So far he has made it he was out of sight for four days but is out when the lights come on now. The tank isn't cycled completly yet the ammonia is down near .25 but there were a few things that I could not put into my holding tank so they had to go right into the 270 some large rocks with zoo's on them (and yes I know i am lucky I did not lose them but they were just overgrowth from colonies that I have). But all the Zoos have also perked right back up now.

That is a good point on spreading out the light I was thinking it would be okay because the two main rock piles are covered with light and thats where most of the corals will go but the front two sections are a little dard with just the tank lights on... Something that had crossed my mind is there something I could do with the two recessed lights above the tank? Oh and I will be getting a 24 inch t5 fixture for right in front of the overflow I don't have any other option on that.

legndairywon... the one on the right is a 14,000k sps and the one on the left is an 14,000k Ushio

even some vhos would make a differance...its been a while sence its seem salt...man i miss that tank...looks real great man, its a real change from when i had it...i really like the skin on it looks insane...wow you will have to let me know when its all set up so i can come check it out!!!! ill try not to put it in my pocket and leave...keep up the good work on it...also what size is that sump? hows the pump working? good flow?

The sump is a 75, pump works great, and and seems to keep good flow going to the seaswirls. and so far I think mixing the black sand with the puka shell is going to keep alot of the fine sand down out of the water stream. I went and picked up the t5 fixture tonight here is what it looks like with out the room lights on and then with them on.

room lights on.

the t5 is just to take care of the dark spot in the center of the tank and it seems to help alot
