My Labor Day weekend dive trip - pics

Make some popcorn and get a drink. This link goes to my album of ~325 pictures from my Blackbeard's Cruise for 4 nights to the Bahamas. Right after hurricane Gustov, the seas were quite rough. After following the captain's directions to throw up only over the lee side of the boat, it was a relief to get under the waves where it was peaceful and beautiful. It was quite an adventure. Got in 10 dives in 3 1/2 days! :D

You may notice some lionfish. They were huge. Saw them on almost every dive. They are a pacific species which apparently started to populate the Caribbean after a hurricane ~ 2004 allowed 7 lionfish from an aquarium to escape into Biscayne Bay. Now they are a plague. The young native fish of other species don't recognize them as a threat and are being decimated. Our captain is doing research with NOAA on the lionfish. Never thought I'd eat an aquarium fish, but they speared and filleted them. Very tasty. The captain dissected out the otolith organ which can be used to determine the age of a fish. These lionfish are growing in 2 years in the Caribbean to the size of a 6 year old Pacific lionfish.

Thanks for the compliment. Sorry you couldn't have joined me. I'm skipping any trip for winter break this year, but I'm hoping I can go again next summer.

Nice pictures, looks like a blast!

I saw this a while back, since it was brought up, interesting video about lionfish: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184738/wid/18298287/?GT1=45002

Exactly, and I stand corrected about the date.

"When Hurricane Andrew hit Florida in 1992, no one gave much thought to the six exotic lionfish that spilt into Biscayne Bay as the storm smashed their Miami waterfront aquarium."

Another link is: http://www.reef.org/programs/exotic/lionfish Our trip's captain was Bruce Purdy, who is the owner of Blackbeard's Cruises and AquaCat. He is noted at the bottom of this REEF article.

I bet you just now got to the last pic! For a while I felt kind of funny about posting it, but all I needed was just a nudge from you to convince me that someone might be interested! I had uploaded it before to share with the other folks who were on the trip. Thx :)

:) No problem!

I just found some more pics from our trip a few weeks ago. Lovely pictures of my in a wetsuit trying not to throw-up while traveling to the second site. I lost that battle. :D

Oh, and no problem on the comments, too. It was fun going through them! And yeah, I'm that bored at the moment... I don't have any papers due for at least 3 weeks. :D
