My last trip to Seascape

I went to Seascape this morning to Exchange a Test kit my kids got me for Christmas.

This young lady asked why I wanted to return it and I said I wanted a better Quality kit (Salifert) and I didn't need the basic Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate, that I had an established Reef and I needed Calcium Alkalinity and Magnesium.

She said that the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals master test kit was the best and that I need to keep it because I still need to test for Ammonia monthly because it accumulated in the water. I said she must be mistaken and she promptly said she had been keeping reefs her whole life and that she wasn't mistaken.

This really set me off and I said I had been keeping reefs as long as she had been on the planet and wanted my money back.

Well they have a %15 restocking fee and she could only give me an in store credit. I wasn't interested in purchasing any thing from them and wanted my money back, the only way I could do this was to credit the charge card it was purchased on. It was a good thing my daughter was with me, because she pulled out her card befor I got really Peeved.

I just got ready to order my salifert test kits and saw that the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals master test kit was only $16.99 and they had it for $39.00, this pushed me over the edge and made me post this rant.

This was my last trip to Seascape!

I understand Greg, people do not understand why I do not go into local shops. It just kills me to see the prices they charge and the condition of the livestock....

That is not as bad as the attitude of their uninformed staff.

I was in Jeff's and listened to his 16 year old son telling another customer that you could not have an anemone in a reef tank, I said that I had 9 in my 65 and he called me a liar.

That was the last time I was in Jeff's.

Realize that most staff get paid close to minimum wage and have to follow store rules. It's not the employees fault they're not competent and have to follow store rules. It's the nature of retail....

Regarding prices, they have overhead the online stores don't have to carry.

I understand that and they have overhead and rules, but to treat a customer like they don't know anything, be rude while they do it, and lie to get you to buy something you don't need is not deserving of my patronage.

I will drive an hour to Fish and other Ichthy Stuff in Oldsmar for quality livestock and dry goods because I know John is not going to lie to me to get me to buy something I don't kneed.

Is an honest and courteous staff to much to ask for these days?

Seascape in particular is the bottom of the barrel. Rick the owner is a know-it-all and his prices are double that of everyone else. I believe that he believe's that he is the secret genius of the aquarium world. FWIW........

Ok them who's fault is it? People need to take personal responsibility for their actions!

It is partially managements fault for allowing this type of behavior to go on, but most of them really don't know much either.

just what we need , a rant about a christmas gift..

IMO you should have been more specific in your christmas request..
I'm sure John would have given your daughter a gift certificate?

Store return policy ..every store has it's own... you shop with your feet and your dollars
and now we know where you won't shop..

One more thing..

just a few weeks ago I traded in a fresh water fish at Seascape that had gotten to large for my tank..This was after I had gone to another store that will remain nameless whose f/w fish looked bad, and they had nothing I wanted .

Does this make the first store bad? no they didn't have what I wanted

On another local (national store) note I was near the new Petco so I stopped in for a filter pad .
all of the fish looked great..

It wasn't a Christmas request, its kinda hard to give a 12 year old girl that kind of detail and no support, her mother does not support our relationship at all.

I wasn't complaining about the gift, actually it was a very thoughtful gift, that she spent to much of her money on.

I went looking for an exchange not an attitude.

This is why 80% of my purchases are on-line. But looking from a retail point of view the return policy was valid. Like Agu said, these people are paid close to minimun wage and probably don't really care if they pisz (not allowed to use 2 S's) every customer that walks in off. At the end of the day they are gettng the same pay. I bet if you had talked to the owner of the store things would have been different, thing again I hear the guy is a pric (can't use a K) so maybe not. riptidesreef.com is where it's at, Cheap shipping and good customer service.

Jenna and I go there a few times a month but never buy anything. I dont think the high prices have so much to do with over head, i just think its a matter of knowing they can charge that much and people will buy. I would of told them I could restock the item myself so I wouldnt get be charged the fee. :-P

On a side note, did anyone happen to notice a sign for Sea Clear just a few shops down in the same plaza, in the Top Dogs shop? Might get interesting..

Thats too funny...."a mag 7 going for like 150 dollars"......I think the last a mag 7 I bought went for like $50.

Yeah. i was reading and also found you could turn the mag 9.5 into a 1200 or 1800 if you get a new impellor and the face plate..
