Love the pics and the corals! What type of camera are you using?
Sounds like we're kind of in the same boat. I got a Canon S3 a few months ago (in hopes of approaching some of the shots I've seen around here) and it's a S.O.B. for tank shots. It does great outside but you zoom in a little on a coral and it will not focus in any mode. With or without the macro lens attachment. The manual focus is worthless 95% of the time. Even on the tri-pod.
I'm wondering if the glass and the water interfere with it? You ever have trouble focusing in close? I"ve had better luck with our point and shoots for macro shots. Don't know what the problem is.
I have a Canon Powershot A80. When you take photos you should take them as close to the glass as you can and straight on. If you shoot on a angle the glass can distort the image. These are a couple of things that I recently learned.
