Mating amphipods

Lately i found over 110 small nassarius baby snails. No bigger than the grain of sand all over the sandbed. This one is too small for me to see with the naked eye yet.

Can you imagine the waste of money if i syphoned my bed every week. I lef a gorgone laying on my sanbed thinking i'd pick her up later. When i did half of it had been eaten away to the core, by critters. Nothing stays very long on my sand bed, its being eaten away pretty quick by the fauna.

On this first picture the sand is loose but small worms are at work with mucus they stick and glue the sand together forming mats.

On this second picture the small worms have glued the sand together into a mat for what reason?

The dense mat will serve as protection maybe or for larvae or food for something else.
