My minimalistic 180g SPS tank

Wrasses are such bold eaters, if you hold a net in the water for a few feedings, he'll get used to it Being there, then start adding food via the net, he'll go right in, in no time.

I just caught him luckily! He finally went into the bottle trap so now I can add the nudis to the DT.

Score one for humans!

Sad thing is it made my day because I was so sick of that fish. It was really hard for me to put it in my FOWLR tank and not flush it but of course I did because I could never flush a live fish. I wish the LFS would take it back (for free) but they wouldnt.

I am hoping that before the end of the year that the berghia nudis will pretty much take over and kill all the aiptasia. We will see though. I am going to try to find some things to take some top down pictures soon as the ones from the front are obviously bad. I can never capture the color even when trying to edit it, etc I feel like I just make it worse.

well I have some bad levels that I just realized after reading Biggles recent thread.

I recalibrated my refractometer and my salinity is around 1.029 so way too high.

I have not tested phosphates or nitrates in forever. Just tested both and I got 27 with my ulr hanna which is around 0.1 which I would think is too high too.

Nitrate is where I am really surprised as it tested at 64 on the Red Sea test which is the highest it goes so for all I know it is higher.

I think this is all from the updates snails and urchins getting rid of the algae that was uptaking these. Now I just have the cheato in the sump, skimmer and gfo.

What do you guys recommend doing? I am most worried about lowering my p04 and nitrates because I can slowly lower the salinity pretty easily with just switching some tank water with ro/di till I get to 35ppt/1.026

Hey Cody, sorry just saw this. I answered you on my thread but now that I’ve read your post, I would suggest simply giving it some time.
You had the nuisance algae growing and competing with the cheato for nutrients but now that the nuisance algae is gone, I suspect the cheato will take up the slack.
What’s the photoperiod on your cheato?

Thanks Matt.

Photoperiod is around 12 hours, the cheato is growing like mad. I am not going to do anything major for now and see if it changes in a couple weeks.

well I bought both a Red Planet mini colony and also mari piece as I sold some frags locally and some equipment I wasnt using.

Man do I have the worst luck, the first Red Planet was completely dead when it arrived. So I got a refund and ordered from someone else and now this one arrived RTNing and I am sure it will be 100% dead by the time I get home from work :(

Well the mari, it was also completely dead when it showed up and I got a refund. I did not buy another as I am just upset now with this AWFUL luck.

The only thing that I think all of these had in common was there was no heating pack in the any of the boxes (I know it is warm outside) but this is the only thing that I could think of that is causing this to happen. All the bags also smelled sooo bad when I opened them.

The corals were so stressed that I could not even dip them so I know it is nothing on my end, especially since all of them were already RTNing in the bag.

Is the success rate of shipping big pieces really this bad or is my luck just awful?

In my experience the success rate isn't that low. It might be the sources you're getting them from or you just have bad luck. It is still a fairly small sample size.

I am starting to think it is more bad luck then anything. All three sources are very respectable, both hobbyist and vendor.

Anyways the tank is doing great recently and I am hoping to take a video from top down sometime this weekend.

OH cr@p!!
That sucks. They were nice pieces.
Sounds like bad luck.
It was overnight Shipping? I’m amazed that the corals would get so bad so fast, especially seeing how healthy the mari piece looked.. red planet as well..
Weird.

Yup exactly my thoughts. Both were overnighted and I picked it up at the UPS station at 9am.
