My Move to Biopellets

Here is an update. My nitrates are at 45 ppm. They haven't increased. They haven't decreased either. No water changes since the last time I added pellets. I've noticed that the amount Of pellets in my reactor has a direct effect on how many nitrates are in my tank. I am going to get some more pellets. My reactor isn't even half full. I will try the ones Jay uses and mix them with the Two Little Fishes NPX pellets I have now.

I am still glad to be down from 100+ in nitrates.

On another note. GFO reactors are well documented, so I won't go into great detail here. On yesterday my Phosphates were at 0.120. I added the TLF Phosban 150 reactor, (I bought it a while back to run Biopellets on another tank) to my main tank. I poured in 150 grams of GFO, a quick flush, and my Phosphates are at 0.027 in 24 hours!!

I am way more afraid of phosphates than nitrates. The "other Jay", ( the one who plays with knives):deadhorse:, gave me some pointers on my Cheato growth. So I am going to up the light wattage in my Refugium. I will keep the Phosphate reactor running just as a safe backup since it was sitting in my closet doing nothing.

I would rely more on water changes to drop levels than media reactors. They are useful and help, but nothing substitutes for regular water changes in my opinion

Yeah, I just bought some more pumps to improve water flow, I believe that I have some areas of poor flow which are building up waste. I can't find any other reasons for the buildup.

Just added my new and improved refugium light. I prefer natural organics removal as much as possible. Thanks for the tip Jay. It has a 60 cfl in it right now. I will see the macro growth it creates. I'll up the wattage if necessary.

I converted to Warner Ecobak pellets about three weeks ago. The TLF NPX pellets started sticking and producing sulfide which is toxic. I dumped the NPX pellets completely an added 500 mg of Warner Biopellets. They are excellent. They tumble well and don't stick. Since I dumped my old pellets, I kind of started over. I added 250 more mg of pellets today. My nitrates are still around 45 ppm.

I also downgraded my return pump. I was running a mag12. I watched a video about protein skimmers which started that too fast of a flow can reduce the effectiveness of protein skimmers. I now run a Eheim 1260 which is about half the gph. We'll see how things progress. My corals still look good but I still have to dose magnesium. I bought another dosing pump but haven't programmed it for mag yet. I hope to get that stable soon.

I am still running pellets without weekly water changes. I am wanting to see how effective the pellets are without water changes. We'll see how the increased pellets do. I am at 750 mg now.

My deltec CA reactor conversion ended up not working long term. Not enough flow. My phos started up. I washed the pellets with tank water I was discarding and put them in a real pellet reactor and within a few days the Phos is undetectable. I am also feeding very heavy at the moment due to adding a bunch of new fish. Also no detectable nitrites. Corals are doing well with the exception of a flower pot coral that does not like the low phos and nutrients.

Ahh, you are a convert to the best biopellets on the market. :) Wow, Mag12 is alot. I run a Mag3 and its perfect...

awesome. Can you provide a link to the exact pellets you are using. Warner Ecobak pellets if I remember correctly.
