My new blue zoanthid colony

Hi y'all,

I just acquired this beauty from The Aquarium Shop. I asked them to get me some blue zoanthids since they get some nice ones from time to time (usually in the summer.) Pete said that the distributor called it "Super Blue". Well, these zoas are super blue all right. They were very reasonably priced, too. They look a lot like the one called "Blue Hornets", don't you think?

The picture does not do justice (partly due to my skill ). They are a lot prettier in person.

yeah they do look a lot like hornets, just a little lighter.... pretty crazy considering what people will pay for ONE polyp of hornets right now!

The actual color is darker and a bit more purplish. I bought the entire colony for just a fraction of the cost of one polyp of purple hornets. Not much more than what a lot of people charge for a common zoa frag .

Nice grab. I'd say either the African Blues (which may even be Caribbean), or the Purple Hornets. It seems like I saw some progression shots recently of what looked like the African Blues that morphed to Purple Hornets. The African Blues are arguably the same as AOI. The original Purple Hornets came from Casey (greystreet/bluegrass corals) and were from Indonesia. Crazy names.

Thanks, gflat. Someone pointed out that Purple Hornets have alternating skirts of yellow and purple. I have to see more closely for that.

I am happy with my pretty zoa, with name or no name .

I have some zoas that are ok but not doing great. They are growing and spreading but are just really small. I don't have the mother colony but have seen it and the mother colony's indv polyps are 2-3 times larger. I have had the frag for quite sometime....

This is the only zoa colony/frag. I have SPS and other assorted corals...

Anything supplement that you just have to add to help them along???

Any suggestion would be great!

I feel sorry for the fish they have. They are always in rough shape with ick and popeye
