My New Clam

In Memoriam
All of the clam talk over the weekend got me motivated to get a clam. This is the final live animal I wanted for our 135g tank. When I saw the sweet clam that astrea was selling I jumped at it. He had it for a long time so I knew it was healthy.

I acclimated for 3 hours and put it in the tank after dark. This is how the clam looks with the lights on this morning for only 15 minutes.

The first shot is without flash the second is with flash. The color without the flash is accurate.

Thanks Zach!

That is a nice looking clam.

Why does it look like it has little holes in the mantle? Mine doesn't have those. Is it a species thing?

They are not really holes. They are just raised spots with a different coloration. It's suppose to be a crocea. But the more I look at it, the more it looks like a maxima to me. Even clams in the same family can look very different though.

it is a Crocea, and the little holes on the edges of the mantle are its "eyes". Really just photosensitive cells on the edges of the mantle.
