My new frag tank

I just got my frag tank from Ocea. It looks very well built and I think it will do very well for warehousing SPS frags. It is 48 x 18 x 13. I have about 9.5 inches in the canopy to work with the lights.

Help be decide on lighting and a skimmer. I'm interested in color only, not growth.

I'll post more details as I get it "going on".

Harry -

My $0.02 for lighting - go with XM 20,000K bulbs. If you go mogul-base, that is. For that depth, and considering you might have a rack holding the corals off the bottom, 175W might be plenty, but 250W surely would. I use 250W 20,000K XM's and love the color. Growth isn't radically fast, but if you are growing the frags elsewhere and coloring them up in this new tank, then I don't think you could top the 20,000K bulbs.

Looking good. Very fancy frag tank :) considering its size I'd probably look into T5s inless you plan on just using those 175s you already have. With such a shallow long tank T5s would fit very well.

What about heaters too. I want two for redundancy.

Before I order new stuff, anybody around the Huntsville area wanting to sell a skimmer, return pump, or MH lights?

Oh say, 2 - 3 weeks.

What wattage Mh are you looking for? And what skimmer did you have in mind?
Edit: What size return also lol.

I'm going to move my 175w MH from a display tank to the frag tank and buy some to replace them on the display. I'd like 400w but I'd take 250w if I could get a deal on some locally. For the return pump I was thinking something around 500 gph.

Actually I'm not in a real hurry about a skimmer because I'm not sure how much I'll need one as I intend to use the water change water from the weekly WCs in the displays to WC in the frag tank (if that makes any sense). If I can find one locally I'll probably go ahead and get it.

wow! looks great harry!

glad you're on here, got a question...
we're planning on next frag swap for April 25th, tentatively. we're going to move it to this time of year as opposed to the fall. anyway, was wondering if you would join us again?? my pink birds nest i bought from you was looking great, and i had to move it to another tank last week and now it's not looking so hot. may need another and since i liked yours so much was wanting to know if i could get another!! :)

Absolutely Julie, I'll be there. Remind me when we get closer and I'll make sure to bring you one.

You may not need another one though. That one doesn't like to be moved. I noticed when I frag it, it sometimes loses some of it's color and takes on a more greenish tint until it becomes happy with it's new environment.

I have two mag sevens I'm not using. I'd like to keep one incase I need one, but I don't really need two sitting on the shelf. I have a couple extra ballasts and atleast one extra lumenarc mini reflector maybe two. As far as the wattage. Right now I've got 1 250w Icecap and 1 400 watt coral vue ballast I'm not using. I'm thinking about replacing the 400 watter over my 92 with 2x250s If I do that I'll have 2 400 watt coral vue ballasts sitting on the shelf. Haha confused? Really the main reason why I haven't switched the 400 out for the 250s is cause I had a brand new 400 watt bulb sitting on the shelf and thats the only 400 watt fixture I have now.
As far as skimmer I was just wondering. I'm about 99% sure I'm going to go ahead and connect both my systems. If I do that I'll probably replace my two skimmers with one large one. But either one of my skimmers would probably be a little big for a frag tank with one or two fish in it. One is a ASM G4 Plus the other is a H&S A200 1260.

Harry-

Glad you'll be able to make it. And since we're putting in early requests, I sure would like another crack at that monti palawensis if you've got some...:)

Thanks,
Will

Sure Will (wpecoul), remind me when we get closer.

Will (8BALL_99), I agree that a Mag7 and those skimmers would be overkill for what I want. I had planned to go ahead and order all the stuff today so I could have it all in a week or so. I'll wait a day to let you decide or your lights. Let me know by tomorrow morning if you'll want to sell the two 400w MH.

Harry,
Nice set up! But if you ask me, you should go with 2 fluorescent shoplight fixtures with 40 watt NO bulbs! :D
j/k
Good luck with it,
Mariner

Thanx, I'm waiting on Home Depot to open now.

I don't know where you order from, But PremiumAquatics is one of my favorite online venders. You will have your stuff in a couple of days if you order from them. Most others take a week or so.

Nice looking set-up, Harry. I am sure you'll get it in shape quickly.

Scapes -

In case you have not seen or heard about Mariner's awesome 75G set up with 40 watt NO bulbs, it's truly amazing. No kidding. He grows nicely colored-up SPS's in that :).
