My new Goniopora

I have had him for 2 weks now, and he seems healthy. I feed him cyclopeeze everyday. Came from Sharky's reef. My clowns are hosting but only brushing on it not diving into it. Here it is-

Looks good. You want to be careful with having them in the sand. Many "Green" Goniopora aka G. pendulus and G. stokesi were actually broken off a stem and were not free form specimens. Since a lot of the time they were in fact part of a larger colony, sand can irritate the flesh around the base and cause the dreaded brown jelly infection which usually ends in the demise of the coral unless something is done about it. Make sure the edge isn't buried into the sand, and if you decide to take it out be very that the sand does abraid the tissue and gently shake any off the coral.

Keep feeding it and it'll hopefully do well for you It's extending which is good to see. It should extend more and more over the next few months.

I have the perfect shelf for it. It was there originally but it wasn't extending that big on. Should Imove it or wait for it to be further aclimated to it's new enviornment?

Try moving it, but make sure that the shelf isn't too close to your lighting because they are prone to bleaching out, especially under MH lamps.

When you go to move it, I would put on some gloves, and do a schooping action underneath of it, so as not to abraid the tissue. Before you do this, though, make sure that it is retracted by gently waving your hand around it.

An easy way to tell if it is OK to be in the sand is to either look or feel the bottom of it. If it was broken off a larger colony, then there will be a jagged edge on the bottom or even part of a stem left. If the bottom is smooth, then it is safe to stay in the sand. Otherwise, I would move it somewhere else

or just find an empty spot on the sand to put a nice flat rock on. then lay the goni right on top of the rock (if using MH).

It will get MUCH bigger than that. These things seem to take up a huge part of the tank with their enormous tentacles.

Will it bleach a lot under MH? Mine seems so happy near the top of the tank. I hate to move it out of the higher water flow, but do I need to move it away from the light?
