My new Heater...

You know, you hear bad things about ALL popular brands. I just had an almost-new Ebo Jager fry a tub full of new live rock I was curing last night. I LOVE the smell of burnt, rotted worms. It's even better than the normal curing smell of rotting worms.

I've had two Visitherm heaters fry culture vats.

It doesn't matter what you buy, you should test and calibrate it before using it, and monitor it carefully for a while. Much of our tank gear is considered "disposable" by the manufacturer, and after a year or so many things ned to be replaced, or at least demoted to non-critical applications like mixing salt water.

Not everything is made as well as Tunze. :) Alas.

Re: My heater story

I have a PC lighting system...When its lights out I had teh heater on and the red light would turn off at 78-79F <--Thats where I want it, but during the day when I have my lights on, the heater never turns off?!Rises to about 81-86 where I then un-plug it....This is weird... What should I do?

I got it from Ebay can I just call WON BROS and tell them the prob or what?

Ken has their contact info so I just might do it...

used? or brand new
If used I calk it up to a loss real quick before you cause anymore damage to your tank

Why would you need to let a titanium heater with an external heat controller adapt to the tank temperature? My pro heat broke after a few months. Took the tank up to like 87 degrees I think before I caught it. Yet the heater said it was still 80 degrees.... took it apart and it looked it was made by a high school physics class.

I have a Won Bros 300W titanium heater. When I first got it the heater would stay on ALL the time regardless of the setting. I also purchased a Medusa Temp controller that would jump all over the place with the temp reading, about 5 degrees. I couldn't figure it out until I unplugged my PC lights and everything worked great. For some reason my two Workhorse 5 ballasts and PC lights were interfering with the way the devices read the temperature. I purchased new ARO ballasts and the problem is fixed.
Just an interesting set of circumstances.

It's probably not a heater issue as much as it's an interferance issue from the pc ballasts. Try to plug your heater into a different outlet that's on a different breaker. It might clear up the issue. Also, you can buy an isolation plug adapter at radioshack to cut the interferance down.

Good luck! ~Charles~

Well, I know the won heaters get a bad name, but I've had mine for over two years, and although the calibration was off by a few degrees, it's been good to me so far.

There is another line of titanium heaters (I forget the brand), but they come with a controller for them. They look quite solid in construction, and come in a variety of wattages (even down to 25). I need to go look for the brand name now.
