hey all, picked this lps up at the lfs a couple weeks ago.

lfs could not identify, and neither can i. nobody seems to know what it is. it is encrusting. you can see the encrusting near the bottom left corner.
mother is also definetly encrusting.

looks like a long tenticle plate (as far as structure) but encrusts.

bright red, with neon green tips. very cool piece.
any ideas?

think i found it... very unusual color, but i think its Polyphyllia talpina .

page 6 of a google search shows a pinkish one. this one is very red. also, the lfs mother colony is not shaped at all like any of the pictures...hmmmm

It is a tongue coral. Many distributors cut large tongue corals into small peo Ed and then epoxy the fags into ceramic disks. LFS then order large frag packs with these guys in them.
Easy coral to keep but one that has a slow grow rate, it takes quite some time for a little frag to regain the long shape of a mature colony.

Definitely not a tongue coral, it's a Pavona species, most likely a Pavona explanulata. I've got one as well, it grows pretty quickly and encrusts as well as plates.

Im in love.

I was unaware that other sp of pavona were in the trade beyond the brown, green and maldensis (orange).

If anyone has a frag in the midwest, please PM me.

The cool thing is it's kind of plating as it grows off the plug, and the plating part kind of self frags every so often. It'll just drop a piece down kind of a like a goni, saves me from having to cut any frags :D

Also it's a lower light coral, burns easily so I'd keep it in the bottom third of the tank, low/moderate flow, loves powdered pellet food too.
