After a long time looking at Zeagle back inflate BCDs I finally didnt buy one...not that they arnt great and high quality I just stumbled into getting more serious about my gear. Im really excited about learning to dive on BP/W rigs, once explained i dont know why anyone wouldnt...

none of this would be possible without the help and guidance/patience of seajay, thanks man.

So far I ordered:

-Stainless steel back plate
-Ultimate Hogarthian Harness system
-oxycheq light weight STA
-personalized mask strap for my GF..(necessary ;) )
-webbing pouch for my safety sausage

Pictures once it arrives.

Next to order this week:

-Oxycheq mach V 30lb wing, in camo (shut it I think it looks cool :eek2: )
-scuba pro look-a-like cam bands
-Apeks reg with 100/50 second stages.
-"brass n glass" pressure guage, whats a good brand?

Il keep yal posted

I'll sell ya an AR to match! :D

I use a Zeagle Scout BC, and have for years. It's light and rugged, perfect for dive travel to warm places, when large metal objects are kept to a minimum. I also use the Zeagle for local inlet and jetty diving. It's tough as nails, and an effortless pleasure to use. If I was still doing deep wreck diving, though, I'd go with a back plate arrangement, as you have. This is the best design for using doubles.

yea iv heard nothing but good things about the scout as well! Looks like a perfect travel BCD. I think the harness system will be easy to travel with(75% of my diving), it seems like it?

RR's are damn nice, and I've owned many of them. I do prefer DPMS these days though for tolerance and finish work, and my custom builds are all on DPMS lowers with Model-1 buiold kits.

AR's are my thing! I've owned well over a dozen or so, with some being a bit faster than others. :D

My pleasure, my friend! I'm really excited for you...

Post pics when the stuff comes in! I can't wait to see that camo wing on your rig. :)

Do you still have plans to dive the rig before you attach the wing? You know, if you nail your weighting down without the wing, you'll be in dramatically better shape than 90% of the divers out there... 'Cause you'll know exactly what your weighting should be from the outset.

I'm psyched for you, man. :D

Dude, SeaJay, you're clearly in the beginning stages of starting your own Cult! ;)

Lets see...
  • Bagwan SeaJay..? Naw, you don't own enough Rolls Royce's for a name like that.
  • SeaJay Jones..? You just don't impress me as the Kool-Aid type.
  • SeaJay Koresh Baynes..? We might be getting closer if you have a huge fence around your house.
  • Rev. Sun Myung SeaJay..? By GOD, I think we're there! :o
So I guess from this moment forward, us "followers" shall forever be known as BAYNIES! :D

glad we have cheap hobbies right? Id love to see some of yours some time. I would be going with RR because it is what XXXXX city police department will require, not that Il get to have it on duty til im done with training..getting ahead of myself is another hobby of mine :D

I will it comes in next week...stupid free shipping..I think its coming by mule..

And you wont be able to see the wing when its on, because...its camo ;)

I for sure am diving it in a pool before I slap the wing on, the concept sounds solid to me. I will need more guidence here however..

Im pumped, found a video online that shows how to rig the webbing.

I'm down to only 1 complete at this time, and 1 lower receiver... The lower does have my name as the Ser.# though, as does a very custom pistol that I was given by a manufacturer that no longer exists... Bad for them, but my pistol is now essentially priceless, even more so with a Ser.# that reads "TGREENE". :D

Yea, I was pretty heavily involved in the industry for many years, so most of what I have or had were actually freebies, 1-off gifts, or prototypes. ;)

Don't get me wrong though, I've spent tens of thousands on them over the years! :eek2:

that is really too cool!

oh and without running the risk of sounding dumb (im kidding I dont care...). Do those HOG guages glow when charged up with a dive torch? I like diving at night. Or is glow in the dark one of those things thats not "cool" in the DIR world....hahaha kidding there...

Hahahahhhaaaaaa!!!

No sweat. :)

In the pool, float head-up at the surface, wearing your "normal gear," including your wetsuit. Do not fin or scull with your hands at all. Stop moving altogether, and relax.
With an empty wing (or in your case, no wing at all)...
And an empty scuba tank (anything less than 500 psi is fine)...
And your head level, looking at the horizon...
And with a full breath of air...

You should float with the water bisecting your mask. That is, your eyes should be looking exactly at the water's surface.

Add or subtract weight until this exercise gets you very exact results. It will probably surprise you how little weight you need, especially wearing a backplate. If you're diving a 3 mil suit, it's likely that you will need no weight at all.

By the way, you can also do this with a full tank, but then add six pounds to the total, since that's the weight difference between a full tank and an empty one (aluminum 80).

If you try this again when the tank is empty, you may have to add or subtract a pound or two.

This will nail your weighting down to the exact pound... But must be repeated in salt water, since your bouyancy is different in salt water (usually adding another five or six is the norm).

With your weighting "nailed" in this way, you will be able to control your bouyancy using your lungs alone... Breathe in, and you'll rise. Breathe out, and you'll sink. Be sure never to hold your breath - that is, never close your throat. Pausing is okay, but always leave your glottis open.

When you get good at this exercise, you'll notice that if you breathe at the "top" of your lungs, you'll rise... If you breathe at the "bottom" of your lungs, you'll sink.

This exercise will do amazing things for your skills as a diver. It'll also mean carrying around as little weight as possible (great for minimizing and streamlining) and being able to minimize the size of the "bubble" in your wing or BC. This means less changes in your bouyancy due to depth changes... That is, you'll rarely have to add or subtract gas from your BC or wing.

Lastly, it'll minimize any effects of an "opinionated BC." This will allow you to place your body in any position possible, and you'll stay there. Wanna go horizontal? No problem - your rig will take you there, and leave you there. Wanna duck your head in a lobster hole? No problem - your rig will take you there, and leave you there. Wanna swim upside-down so that you can see the bubbles on the ceiling or clean the barnacles off of the bottom of a boat? No problem - your rig... Well, you get the idea. :)

Heh... Nope, glowing gauges are in the "doesn't matter" category. :)

The spg that Tim is referring to (HOG) IS the same one that is made for Halcyon, OMS, Salvo, DIR ZONE, and the rest. The company is an Italian company named "Termo," and they make the gauge in quantities of 100 for anyone that wants to put their logo on them. They're quite the jewel-like, impressive piece of gear. The bodies are double-chromed for durability and the glass is much more scratch-resistant than the plastic used in many other gauges.

And they are heavy... And glow like the sun when charged. You'll love it...

Aw, jeez... :D

You know, I would love to claim these ideas as my own, but... They're straight out of a Fundies course and the Fundies book. I'm just thrilled to be able to be the guy that pointed y'all in that direction... :)

Actually, the weighting formula above was right out of one of my PADI books - Open Water 1, I believe - but I think that's been abbreviated in today's PADI books, which really is a disservice to new divers.

For what it's worth, the long hose configuration ("Hogarthian") used to be on page 8 of the PADI Advanced Open Water handbook. So, interestingly, GUE ("DIR") was not the first place I'd seen that. Again, I don't know if the same configuration is in modern PADI AOW books.
