My new rig (BP/W)

I use a very low profile Cressi Focus mask with corrective lenses... LOVE IT!

While in FL a week ago, I stopped by Fill Express to talk to Mark (owner) about the dive industry's paradigm shift and where diving as a sport was going. Fascinating conversation. :)

...Even cooler was his shop - good God, amazing engineering with his fill system!

Anyway, I had the chance to finally try on the Dive Rite solution to the Halcyon "Low Volume" mask, called the "Double Lens" mask ( http://www.divegearexpress.com/essentials/masks.shtml ).

It's the same mask - same silicone mold, but with a slightly more minimalist frame around the lenses. Fit is identical to the old Scubapro Fino, which was considered the standard in technical masks for decades. I actually like it better than my Halcyon... All three masks are exactly the same mask, but with a slightly different (cosmetic) frame. The Dive Rite seems to be the simplest, and therefore probably the most attractive.

I also got to try on the latest Hollis mask, the Hollis M1 ( http://www.divegearexpress.com/essentials/hgmasks.shtml ). This, of course, would compare to Halcyon's and Scubapro's frameless masks, always notable for being easy to tuck (making great backup masks) but lacking the perfect fit of framed masks.

The new M1 is simply amazing - feeling very much like a two-window mask (much better than SP's or H's frameless entries) but with the simplicity and minimalism of a frameless, this beautifully designed mask opens up a diver's field of view significantly (around 15%) over the two-windowed masks that have become the standard in diving. In addition, it was really great to see a satin texture in the silicone, rather than the shiny black that is typical. Aside from looking very cool and very understated, the texture is unique, which is refreshingly different in a sea of similar-looking masks.

Highly recommended. :)

I don't know if Hollis offers built-in corrective lenses or not... But glue-ins are always an option if they don't.

I just wear my contact lenses. Never had one float off my eyes, even if I open my eyes underwater like in a mask flood or something. That said, I do squint on the rare occasion that I open them underwater without a mask on.

How was your trip, bud? Sorry I haven't been able to return calls lately - I've been totally slammed since the weather broke. :)

The diving was amazing in Grand Cayman. We dove "Eagle Ray Rock" and "Armchair Reef".

I know what you mean about being busy... I'm up to my eyeballs in work, plus as you know we bought a new house the day before we left on vacation, so upon our return I've had to deal with moving and a number of various renovations which include knocking down walls to build a 730g in-wall reef system that will contain a total of 1100 gallons with the support systems.

Yeah, no doubt! Sounds like an absolutely incredible project...

Glad you had a good time on your trip. :) Kym and I enjoyed ours, but I don't think we'll bother with another cruise again - for the money that we spent, we could have done a lot more, and had a lot more fun. Too much clock-punching for our tastes on a cruise. :)

Atlantis (the new resort) was incredible. By far, the best part of the trip. :)
