Everything that you see there (and dont see, he left a mogul socket for me) is courtesy of our friendly neighborhood undergrad and reefrian, if Im not mistaking he built the stand and hood him self and did a very crafty job w/ plenty of easy access cabinetry and magnet release door I just cant wait to put water in it!

I'll second the vote for drilling instead of an overflow. I'm running an overflow right now, but after hearing too many horror stories I just cant recommend it. Just my 2 cents.

i got a 40g thats drilled on the bottom "back" corner of the tank...
(not bottom of the tank) it looks like it was setup for a external pump.
i was thinking of making this a reefready tank by adding a overflow and using a elbow pvc w/ a straight pvc pipe. would this be effective for an overflow? what's stopping me from moving forward with the project ... i'm afraid it would get clogged somehow and create a mess.

Not a 100% positive what you are doing. Are you going to put an overflow box (with teeth) inside of your tank. Then create a U-tube that leads straight down to the sump? If that is what you are thinking - then it won't work. The siphon will be broken when the return pump is turned off.
As far as clogged system and creating a mess, just create a system that is fail safe both when the pump fails or the overflow gets clogged. In my current system, if for some reason the overflows got clogged, I doubt it will over fill the tank. Like wise, if my return pump fails, my sump can easily handle the water plus about another 5 gallon.

minh heres a illustration of what i wanna do... only problem i have is worrying about whether at the elbow area is gonna get clogged or not. i wanna do a built in overflow box/drain type deal.

How big is the overflow box? Can you fit an elbow PVC inside the overflow box? if you have room, you can aways drill two bulkheads and have two drain pipes. Also - I don't know how much flow you are expecting, but remember that the elbow will reduce the flow down.

there is no overflow box atm, i was contemplating building one and using using that idea (elbow piece for the tank...)

Let me go home tonight and do some measurement. I will post a more detail idea of what I think MIGHT work. Also - you want to add a durso pipe. The way you have it will be quite low. Of course the disadvantage of a durso pipe is that you introduce bubbles to your return.
BTW - what are you using for a return pump? How far below the tank will be your sump?

i was planning to use the 29g i have all my stuff in now as the sump.
i have a few in sump return pumps i can choose from, is the more powerful one better?
