My "new to me" tank

So, today I bought what I think is something between an 80 and 90 gallon tank on Craigslist. Its an acrylic tank measuring 60in wide x 18in deep x 20in tall. It is reef ready and the overflow sticks out about 4 1/2 off the back wall in the tank. The whole back wall is overflow. The tank is scratched to pieces:sad1:. It came with what looks like an oak stand and hood. I think the light was a 48" Current Nova Extreme with 4 bulbs? And a Marineland 360 canister filter.

The livestock from what I can remember off the top of my head is as follows:

2 very large Black Tail Damsels (I think these will have to go)
1 clownfish ( exact same size as my current clown so will probably have to go)
2 large pajama cardinals ( one looks very sad, O said there used to be 3 but 1 died. I suspect the nice looking one is a bully. These will probably go too. Their red eyes give me the creeps.)
1 purple psuedochromis (I will try and keep this, but I have a striped fang blenny and a springeri dottiback that Im not sure will like this)
banded coral shrimp (not sure on this, Ive heard they can be a nuisance)
a few turbos
Not enough sand IMO and not enough rock but I will be putting the rock and sand from my 37g in so this works out perfect.

Corals:
4 or 5 dinner plate sized elephant ear mushrooms (will keep 1)
3-5 very large colonies of hammer coral. (will keep 1 and frag the rest)
Very sad toadstool leather (not sure on this one)
2 dinnerplate sized colonies of weird shiny pink stuff. Maybe clove polyps that arent opening?
tons of zoos ( I will frag these)
Enormous brown nepthea. (this could be fragged into at least 3 sizable organisms)
small clove polyp colony that is barely opening.
I think there were a few other shrooms in there

I will repost with pics and a more concrete list of what I want to sell/donate when I get all this home.

This tank needs some serious love. And it is teaming with aiptasia.

List of things to do in the near future:
Break tank down and move from south side of okc to my house on the north side.
Stain stand and hood black
Take inventory and "clean house"
move contents of 37g into new tank
Kill aiptasia

Things to do in distant future
Add Skimmer
Add sump/fuge
add more light (will try and find a way to add my 150w mh without melting anything)
Add ATO
Calcium reactor?
possibly replace actual tank since it is so scratched up

I have alot of work ahead of me.

Keep me in mind if you decide to lose the cardinals. I like their red eyes.

Yup. Lots of work. #1 on the list of things to do will probably be the hardest. Good luck!

i personally would put a skimmer on the near future list. that pseudochromis and your dottyback are too similar imo and would probably cause a fight to the death. if you decide to rehome him, please keep me in mind. also i would take care of that aiptasia problem before adding any more rock.

but most important, congrats on the new tank!!!!!!

lol thanks. I didnt think he would take kindly to the psuedochromis but my dotti is so good with the fang blenny, I thought I might cautiously try and introduce them. O well, guess not. Sry I didnt really list them in order but I plan to get rid of as much of the aiptasia as I can before I combine tanks and I would get a skimmer but I spent money I didnt have when I got this whole set up. Thats why all the things that involve money are on the distant future list =)

i definitly understand that whole money issue. i bought my 150tall off craigslist (extremely cheap) 3 weeks ago now, and still haven't been able to buy anything for it except some dry rock. no sump, no pump, not anything to get it running. i was actually thinking of building a diy skimmer to save a little $$$. if i go that route and get it going before you buy one, i'll be sure to let you know how it works out.

Watch the RC Used equipment for sale thread...this time of year people are selling alot of extra stuff they have getting ready for Christmas...I have bought a bunch of stuff cheap by deciding what I wanted and watching and being patient...someone WILL be selling it...eventually!!!! Good Luck.....!:fun4:

Well, got it moved yesterday and the fish, rocks and coral are all settled into a 30g horse trough in my kitchen. My cats and dogs think this is really interesting!

I've painted the stand black and now I need to know how to clean an acrylic tank. Paul?

The tank has what appears to be a sump built into the back filled with bio balls. Ick. What do I do with these? Should I just toss them or clean them or leave them be? It looks nasty at the bottom...

I will post pics tonight or tomorrow

Update:
The Stock tank crashed and I lost the damsels and the clown :cry:Totally sucks even if I didnt want to keep them. Word of advice, even a tiny amount of lemon juice used to kill aiptasia will drastically affect your ph and it probably wont affect the aip...
Im uploading pics of the new setup now

Gonna be a nice tank, and you're right, you need more rock!

Are you gonna condense everything from the 2 tanks into this one? They both looked awfully nice when I saw them!

Someone has been advertising cured reef rock on craigslist.....

Maybe I missed it, but what lighting are you gonna use?

48" current nova extreme. Not enough wattage really. Only has 4 bulbs. I have alot more rock than that, I just didnt want to lose all the biological on it during the cycle. The tank is experiencing a huge ammonia spike right now. I am going to be combining my 37g with this tank and taking some rock out of my 20g. They are both stacked to the top at the moment, and all the rock that had coral on it from the 90g is crammed in as well. My fish are ****ed, as they really have no where to swim right now!

So, while the tank is cycling, I am dreaming up a livestock list. Here are the fish that I already have and will be moved into the tank:
1. Gold Striped Maroon Clown
2. Striped Fang Blenny
3. Springeri Dottiback

The fish I WANT to add:
4. 4 Lyretail anthias (1 male and 3 females)
5. some kind of tang (sail fin? + some other kind?)
6. Maybe Bangai Cardinals
7. Mandarin Goby (after tank is very well established and I replace all the bio balls in the built in sump with rubble rock)

Reminder: 80-90 gallon 5ft long tank
Any thoughts, suggestions or warnings?

if you're going to trash them, can i have the old bioballs? i'm wanting to build a coil denitrator for the new setup and they would work for my tight budget!

Ok, just got all the bioballs out and replaced with live rubble rock. Hope this speeds up the cycle and helps me build up a copepod population for my future mandarin. Also, got a Yellow Splotched Rabbit fish today and put it in the 37g just until the 90 finishes cycling. He is currently hiding in the back of the tank looking very ****ed off and "splotchy". Hope he is not a coral eater. Ill let you know if he is tomorrow! lol

Yay! Rubble rock worked, and tank is through the ammonia cycle! Trace amount of nitrite as of last night. I bet it will be all clear in the next day or two. Ill do a monster water change to get rid some of the nitrates that accumulated due to the cycle and hopefully I "move in" this weekend. Sry no pics on rabbit fish. He is still scared of his own reflection.

thanks again for those bioballs. it's possibly one of the most expensive things on my coil denitrator parts list. this will help out soooo much!

also wanted to say the new tank is coming along very nicely. now it just needs more coral! never can have too many imo!

and on another note, your 20gal is absolutly GORGEOS!!! it was a real treat to see in person. the pictures of it online don't do it any justice. if you can get the new tank to look like that, you'll have one of the better looking reefs i've seen.

Thank You! I hope the bigger tank will look good too!
