My new (used) tank

By the way, do you have light on just one side?
The 400w MH is on the right side, but the left side has a couple of 24" T-5's. Not sure if I'm going to be happy with this, but I thought I'd give it a shot. As it is, I've planned to put corals that don't need much light (like mushrooms and anthelia) on the left, and keep most of the other stuff on the right. The lighting figured into my aquascaping a good bit.

It's an interesting set up/experiment.

So you did not get astrea in your order? Where did you get your CUC?

I was thinking about ordering a bunch of small Florida cerith that reproduce easily in an aquarium from Reef Cleaners. In the mean time, I added a few Trochus snails and they are doing well. They seem to stay on rocks while my Golden astrea tends to hang out high up on glass surfaces.

The lighting would make more sense (possibly) if you saw the top of the tank. There's a large sealed acrylic top/brace with about a 10" by 18" opening on each side, but no opening in the middle. If I put a light over the middle of the tank it would be directly over 1/2" thick acrylic.

Here's the deal on the CUC order. I saw the recommendation on KingRicky's thread for Reef Cleaners. I checked them out and decided to give them a shot. Their prices are fantastic! I ordered a good many hermits, ceriths, nassarius and astreas early last week. Somehow my order got lost in the shuffle and didn't ship last week. John at Reef Cleaners was very nice to deal with; he agreed to upgrade my shipping and send my order out this Monday. When, for some reason, my order didn't ship till Tuesday, he actually refunded the entire amount of my order -- I didn't ask him to, he was just doing everything he could to keep a customer happy.
Anyway, I wound up getting a nice supply of hermits, ceriths and nassarius for free...so I'm not complaining about the missing astrea. And who knows, they may still show up.

Talk about customer service!! I'm ready for a CUC myself, maybe I ought to give them a try.

BTW 4:37 a.m.??? Mariner you're an early bird!!!

Tank is looking good Marine  I wish I had room for that size of tank. :(

I am glad to here about the customer service from Reef Cleaners, I am planning to order some from them next week.

Hey, steph, if you would like to order some from Reef Cleaners, would you like to order together with me? Since you and I both live in Madison, we can have it shipped to one of us to save on shipping cost.

hehe sorry Mariner, we hijacked your thread again.

LOL. The way ya'll hijack, you should join a terrorist group! :p

Hey, checked my water param's just now. Here's what I've got.
Temp. 78.8
pH 8.1
Alk 11 dKH
Calcium 370
Mag. 1050
Nitrate 5-10 (cheap test)
SG 1.026

Obviously the Mag is very low. Not surprising, since I've been doing water changes with Instant Ocean to try to get nitrates down. The real SHOCK came when I checked the Reef Chemistry calculator and found that for a 135g tank it will take 92 OUNCES of Randy's Mag supplement to bring the level up to 1300.
:eek2: :eek1: Uhhhh, did I just go from driving a Toyota to a diesel guzzling Powerstroke? ;) :rolleye1:

Beaslebob gets mag at Brenntag chemicals in Huntsville. He was telling us today at the NARC meeting that the price has recently gone up -- $25 for a 50lb. bag. Never been there myself; I get mag from Beasl. But Here's the company website.

In my limited experience, every tank is different. Initially you have to test and tweak a lot. It takes awhile to learn what a tank needs supplement-wise to stay in balance. Eventually, you and your tank fall into a consistent routine. I rarely test anything in my 75g anymore; when I do, the numbers are almost always exactly where I want them.
So, I'm going through the process of learning the 135g. Numbers this morning were:
Nitrates -- 5 (still edging down!)
SG -- 1.0275 (more evap than I'd expected -- added a gallon and a half of RO.)
Mag -- 1300 (perfect, after adding a lot of supplement over 3 days)
pH -- 8.1+
Alk -- 11 dKH (good number, but I haven't added any buffer yet; I know this number will start dropping soon enough)
Calcium -- 430 (about right -- looks like it'll take a couple tablespoons of dowflake [mixed in RO] per day to keep this up)

I haven't started dripping Kalkwasser in this tank yet. Still debating it in my mind, but I think eventually I will.

I buy mine from Brenntag Also. They sell pretty much any chemical you could want.. They also have several different brands\grades of the same chemicals.
