My old golden fish

I have a 3 years old gold fish with a big fan tail. I heard that they live about 2 years in captivity. Is it true? I'm keeping him, along with 4 other fish (a black moor with very big eyes, he is around 2 years too, and I don't know the name of the others, think there are plecos, they are really big, they have around 3 years too, and one of them has some kind of prominences on his had. My problem, aaa , the problem is that he (the goldfish) is just sitting, doing nothing, in the middle of the day, like he is sleeping or something. Is he sick?

goldfish can live many many years, like 20 or better I am thinkin but this site is saltwater specific so you may not get a ton of freshy help. Do you do regular water changes? Many people don't understand the importance of water changes in FW or SW even worse and just keep adding water as needed letting all the waste and nasties build up in the water.

I change my water once in a year. Is it ok? Do you know a sweetwater site instead :) ?
Thank you for your time.

You mean freshwater? Just try a web search for one. And to answere your question, No once a year is not good at all. When the water eveporates and you just keep adding fresh in on top all the nasties just keep building up in the water and over time it is just a toxic waste zone in there. Fresh water fish are much more forgiving than Saltwater but still need proper care. Goldfish are huge water poluters also. They eat a lot and poop a lot so they need extra good tank husbandry (water changes, vacuming gravel) to keep them happy and healthy long term. I would do a few good water changes and see if that helps..........And don't tear down the tank and start from scratch with clean water, that will cause it to re-cycle. Just vacume out the junk good and replace the water with dechlorinated fresh water a few times then 1 X a month :).
