My phytoplankton set-up, nothing fancy....

I am using bags to culture the phytoplankton which will cut down on sterilizing 2L soda bottles. I use the bottom 2/3 portion of the 2L for holding the bags and the top 1/3 portion for a make-shift funnel. I am experimenting with tank water, new culture water made from DI water and IO salt and different amounts of f/2. I plan to start rotifers and do it the same way, using bags.

Sorry for the link, but there is no sense in duplicating pics:

Looks very cool. One thing though, put your air pump higher than the bags so water doesn't siphon into it if the power goes out.

Fred, is Kitchener near Chatham?? Sounds familiar for some reason. Yeah, I hope to upgrade to bigger bags some day. A friend gave me 200,000 bags for free and they just happen to fit in the 2L bottles easily.

Kathy, yes, I plan to mount the pump higher, just haven't installed the shelf yet. It's funny how things get pushed off once the initial project is under way.

I'm two hours away from Chatham, towards Toronto.

Nice score on the bags. I was wondering where you found them.

Its funny, I knew they used big bags in aquaculture, but it neve occured to me to try this on a smaller scale for home culture.
