My potential 75 gallon build

I have a 75 gallon tank with nothing it and its has been in storage for about 4. 5 years and was wondering what exactly would i need to turn it into a FOWLR ( itested it last year and one point because i was considering selling it to see if it still held water and it did)

the items i have for it

are the glass top
the florescent light
and stand

I use to have a aqueon 55 filter rated for aquariums up to 90 gallons per hour
and a heater rated for 300 watts
but i put them in my 46 gallon tank

So i'm thinking 2 200 watts ones or 2 150s

and maybe a new HOB

thanks for the help

For a fish only you could go with stock lighting the fish do not need anything special. I would add some LR for the fishes and for a bio-filter, heaters, a decent HOB filter, and a powerhead for some circulation. Just my 2 cents worth Good luck.

This is going a little off topic, but why do people do fish only systems? IMO if you are going the marine route Corals are a must. A tank with just rock looks 'unfinished' to my eyes. Even if you just went with super easy softies it would at least make the tank look more complete, and its not like they need any extra care or expense, a couple of T5's would grow most softies, right?

Because i'm not sure of the compatibility of some of my potential selections with corals

So i wound not need a sump and/or skimmer

If your just doing fish you could get by without one IMO. If at some point you want to get into corals then I would at least incorporate a sump now. Corals require better water quality than a fish only.

With all that being said a sump and skimmer would still be of use on a fish only. If for no other reason than to help hide equipment, make top off a bit easier that sort of thing.

No. Some people enjoy fish more than coral, personal preference. If said fish enjoy nipping at corals it makes sense not to add them.

Correct and i'm one of the people you mentioned as well

Sio i will rule out a skimmer and a sump for the time being

Know where the best place online to get black sand and rock are as the heater an hob filter are easy to come by

I'm not sure if i'm allowed to bump this old thread of mine

But i have been stocking and compiling a list of what i have and don't have for this build as far as equipment goes so here goes

for the 75 gallon
the stuff previously mentioned

2 aqueon heaters that are divided up as follows 200 and 300 watt

for the quarantine tank i'm thinking an aqueon 15 gallon if i can find or if not a probably 20 gallon long
with this 100 watt heater i have
along with my aquatech tech 5 to 15 gallon filter (if it works i'm currently running it to see overnight) and yes i realize it to small for the 20 so hold on a second

I'm thinking of buying an extra aqueon 55/75 along with another aquatech 5-15 power filter

i was wondering how this looks so far and if i'm missing anything

the plan is to buy the sand salt and rock after i get the equipment in order

Because some people just like fish. I like fish and inverts much better than corals personally. I'm doing some just because, but I'd rather have a huge leopard moray, undulate trigger, lionfish, blue spot sting ray, Blue ribbon eel, or an octo or something over some corals.

But me personally even with a species tank or FOWLR I would spend the money on a good light. Some of those fish have some fantastic colors that quality lighting accentuates.

A skimmer would be beneficial even on a FOWLR tank. Once you see all the black crud it pulls from the water you'll know what I'm talking about. Cleaner, more oxygenated water is always a bonus.

I'm FOWLR right now and will be adding a sump to my system, to hide the equipment as Gone Fishin said, and add extra water volume. I don't think your water can be too clean for fish, but I could be wrong. Just ask Mrs. O

I am a bit confused, will the extra 55/75 be a QT or another DT. I have used a 15g for small fish before. Keep in mind that you will be most likely be doing more WC's in the QT and if you medicate the fish the dose is usually based on how many gallons your medicating.

To me there is just to much risk involved with coral (i may take that dive later) + ever since i got in trouble for politics in this forum onetime over lion fish i have had a weird fascination for them so i'm thinking a primarily lion fish tank with maybe a puffer and/or eel/blenny if stock limits allow at this point i'm really only "married" to one of my selections i can give a list if you want

i really don't mind seeing equipment any more after owning fresh for years and i'm considering adding the skimmer (got any ideas) after the tank is up and running

It would be used ether at the same time as the other for more current and/or for a back up in case the other fails like both heaters

I don't put corals in overly massive tanks such as tanks over 180 gallons, things just start getting way to expensive for me after that. Especially a 1200ish gallon pool that I'm planning, that would take a massive sum of $ to get everything for a reef. And the number of corals you'd need and the size they'd have to be is huge too. Lighting? I'm not even going to go there lol.

One day I will do a pool like that for a stingray in the floor with a walkway over it.

I'd go with a hob skimmer, heaters, and two power heads.

For QT - 2 tanks, 2 heaters, two hob filters, and pvc so I could do the TTM with prazipro

If you weren't thinking about adding any corals, might as well try a $10 frag of xenia and let it take over your rockscape

I wanna do something like that with red tailed catfish, arapaima (if i could findone) and piranha

but enough rambling, on to topic at hand

i'm thinking 80 pounds of this sand should be enough

and a combo of this rock and this rock

and and i will post my planned stock later my planned stock

So here is the planned stock so tell me if it to much to little or just right, or what can and can't go together etc

the one i'm more "married" to but it willing to do others if i must

Dwarf/Zebra Lionfish

other lion fish i'm interested in

Antennata Lionfish
Fu Manchu Lionfish

puffers:
saddle puffer
or spotted puffer

and the eel
