My Royal Gramma

Anybody else hate their royal gramma as much as I do? I put a firefish in my tank a couple months ago and gramma harassed the poor thing to no end and still does until this day. Now the other day I added a beautiful midas blenny which gramma has cornered into a small crevice in a rock. The Blenny hasn't been allowed out in 2 days. poor guy just peeks his little head out all day. I know there's really nothing I can do to change the gramma, it's just how he is. Anybody else have similar experiences? Also, anybody ever caught a royal gramma? I'd try to catch him and take him back to the store but he's so fast! Anyways, i just wanted to vent. Cheers

Mine was mean the first day in QT. Now gets along with a blenny, chromi, firefish, flasher wrasse. I caught an older gramma with a small bottle trap and mysis. He had a cave hang out and I left it in front of cave. Didn't take long for me.

What size tank do you have? Was Gramma first fish introduced to tank? Could always try the mirror trick. Tape small mirror to glass and hopefully that will take his attention off the others.

3 ft by 18 inches by 18 inches, 50gallons. Stocked w 1 clown, 3 fire fish, 1 scared Midas blenny, and 1 total @sshole royal gramma lol. The clown and royal gramma were first.

Mine started in a 29g cube w/2 clowns and was peaceful.
Son no longer wanted cube so I had to move the 3 inhabitants to my 90g sump WHICH is housing my Achiles Tang (out of QT and fattening before DT)............Achiles is keeping him in place :)

They usually sleep in a rock at night. If you can figure out which one, and it's accessible, just pull the rock out after the lights go out. Now, getting the Gramma out of the rock may be another matter...

I have a Royal Gramma in my 45g cube that does the same thing. I have mine in with a Starry Blenny, fire fish, and Cardinal. He chases them every time they come out into the open water.

Mine was a bully in my 55 to my pair of Lubbock's Wrasses. Really went after the male whenever it got near it. They are very territorial fish (normally just defend their cave/overhang), but sometimes you get one that goes out of its way to be a bully.

Bottomline is, they are not as "peaceful" as most thing they are.

I just put one into my DT and he's a butthead! I had the same experience...he chased my firefish and he tried to go after my target mandarin but he is not afraid of anything:) The last gramma I had was very peaceful...this one..not so much:/

Mine was kind of a bully until I put my foxface in the tank. I think the foxface's size unsettled him, because now he's pretty mellow.

Wow, I must have gotten lucky. My gramma was one of the first two fish in my QT (with a firefish). He got along great in QT and is probably the most subordinate fish in my DT except the firefish.

I wonder if it is because he was so small (about 3/4") when I got him?

I have had my Royal Gramma for nearly six years (got him in May of 2008) and he has been very peaceful.

IME, they are quite peaceful with the right mix of fish and in the right size aquarium. If they are going to show aggression, it's usually in smaller tanks and against fairly predictable fish... fish that are similarly shaped and colored (the two-toned firefish), and fish that occupy the same holes in the rocks (midas blenny). They can be kept with both in a larger aquarium but it can be a different story in that 50 breeder.

As for catching them... when I used to work in a lfs, the owner was wish washy about throwing fish in a 125 gallon display reef so I would have to get them out on occasion and had three methods. First was simply putting flake food (since it floats) and using an oversized net to get them when they came to the surface and this nabbed a couple yellow-tail damsels. Second, I would put a conch shell into the tank and wait for it to get inspected by the desired fish and plucked a Flame Angel out of there in about fifteen minutes. Finally, I just started net feeding the tanks which is just using the net to empty the thawed frozen foods into the tank. It didn't take long for the fish to recognize the net as part of their feedings and lost all fear to the point that I had to be sure that no fish were in the net when I was done feeding!

Good Luck and hopefully changing the rock work will help things out a bit, but if not, I hope at least one of these suggestions can help you out.

Mike
