my skimmer stincks

Hello,
okay so I have a reef tank in my room, which is fairy small .. its about 100 gallons and an oversized skimmer, and fed 24/7 so the skimmer SMELLS.

anyone know of ways to remove the smell ?

I have a couple of fans in the room, which are fine.

also was thinking of running some material just outside the sump and over the skimmer, to remove the odor ... anyone can think of anything ? carbon for air ?

I clean my skimmer every single day. It helps to keep the smell down.
You could run the skimmate into an overflow container, outside of the sump, and place some bleach in there to disinfect it. Don't put it into the skimmer collection cup, just in case it overflows. You don't want it in your sump.

Thanks, yes I clean it daily.

whats inside those air freshner things ? carbon ? maybe I can put my sump in a wooden enclosure and just put 2 fans on it, with carbon over it, so all the smell gets filtered out ?

Activated carbon will work for airborne odors. A bit of baking soda in the cup does wonders as well.

I have used carbon as well, it works great as long as it doesn't get wet.

I have been wondering why they don't make skimmers with built-in carbon air filters. I mean we even have carbon-filtered litter boxes...

from my research just now, seems like carbon removes minimal odor from air. something like 1% !

Im going through different air purifiers to see which ones remove odor as well.

if anyone has links, or uses one, let me know please :)

I used the lid of a CD spindle (?) as container, poked holes in it and filled it with small carbon pellets (ROX 0.8) and fixed it to the lid of my Bubble King. There was no discernable odor after the air from the skimmer passed through that. You could try something similar very cheaply.

thanks, I will do that tonight !

now to research air carbon and which is more usefull.

also picked up a bucket of arm and hammer baking soda.

thanks guys.

I added an automotive valve cover breather filled with carbon pellets and a cotton ball to hold it all in to my collection it works great as stated above. It really helps.

You can set a nylon hose with some carbon on top of the lid of the skimmer. Then get a waste container that has carbon to remove the smell. I have the SRO waste collector, and I never smelled the skimmer waste after putting them in use. They work great to shut off the skimmer when full also.

ohh that's nice ^^ !
thank you

Im gonna look into those, its great that it shuts off the skimmer too, would I need a controller for that or does it come with it ?

The controller is in the yellow box in the second picture. It is what the skimmer plugs into.

Question about the waste collector... How high is the inlet to the waste collector from the bottom of the collector? Is it through the lid of the cylinder?

It approximately 16", and yes, that is a ball like a ping pong ball. That is a safety feature in the event the switch fails when the unit fills completely and does not shut off the skimmer. The ball will not allow the skim to escape out of the air vent. This will then let the collection cup overflow as if the collector was not present. You are protected from an overflow of skim on the floor either way.

Avast Marine makes one like this too, in various sizes, depending upon your needs. It's called the Davy Jones Skimmate Locker. Like the one above, it has a section for carbon and the shut off controller hooked to a pressure hose that you plug the skimmer into.
