My sons 29 gal build

Soon we're going to be doing a build for my son a new tank. He's been running a 10 gal now for about a year. Really just been doing the top off's and feeding. But hey, he's 11 soooo not too bad I suppose. This is the plan right now, I'm sure it'll change before we get done.

I've got a 29 that he'll be using. He's got his existing 10 gal. I'll get him another 10 and we'll do a split sump fuge design. I'll pick up a couple mag 4's one for the return, one for a closed loop. We'll drill the back(or if anybody knows if it's OK to drill the bottom of a 29 AGA)for one drain, two returns and one supply and 2 returns for the CL. Strainer and open pipes blowing into the back of the rocks on the closed loop. Lock lines for the fuge returns. Might make the CL a spray bar connected on both ends to insure good flow throughout it. This will have a DIY OF surrounding my version of a stockman,. Probably will do the heaters in that OF. Both sump and fuge will have a rock rubble compartment. DSB in fuge, cheato for the macro algae. We'll drill and connect both 10's together. With some kind of reinforcement where we drill the 10's(they break pretty easy). Might even go with just a simple "u" tube primed with an aqualifter between them. We'll see.

This will be lit with 4 39w T5Ho's, probably ice cap reflectors. Not sure where the actinic will come from. I have a workhorse 7 Already I want too use for this, so actincs may just be a T8 as I have several of those around.

I've got an old seaclone I'
ll megga mod for the skimmer, mesh wheel a maxijet 1200, do some other creative work to it.:eek2:
This will have an foam and rock backdrop to hide everything. Also we'll be doing a DIY stand possibly with the "built in" look. I just want to start this thread to kinda group everything in one spot, get any feedback as we go in order to tweek things, and keep my head straight on the plan so my adult ADD self doesn't get caught all up and end up building some 200 gal build for him instead. :D
heres a couple preliminary drawings for now.

Building this on the cheap BTW with mostly stuff I already have, as well as LR and sand from my wife's cousin who's tearing down his 125(we JUST built it BTW...bang head here). As well as some of the equipment he already has.

This will be a while before we start this and the build will take some time most likely. Just planning at the moment. Hope to start within a couple weeks. We'll see.

The red item is a phosban reactor, will plumb it off the return pump.

General hole pattern. I realize this is a ton of holes in the back of a 30in long glass panel. So if anyone has ever drilled the bottom of one of these small tanks, I'd like to hear about it. Regardless though, except the drain to fuge, all others will likely just be 3/4 in bulkheads.

umm so far its sounding good. i wouldn't reccomend drilling the bottom unless by a professional because i believe it is tempered. As for the amount of holes, this is just my opinion, but the back may need to be reinforced.

Looking good, Tagging along.
Can you please elaborate on that Seaclone mod? I ahve one lying inthe closet and would love to use it on a small tank if that mod is not really expensive and if it's performence will be acceptable.

The seaclone had the usual mods done to it already. Other than doing the mesh mod on a maxijet, I'm not sure yet what all I'll do to it. The way the seaclone drains is going to be addressed though.

Just got back from picking up the FREEEEE! LR. :D I got about 60lbs. of it. It's pretty well HA covered, so most all went into my sump for now. I'll run it through the 135 for a while. Piece by piece, my tangs will mow it down. Other than that, it's real pretty rock. About 1/2 will go in the 29, he';s already got 13 lbs. now so it should be plenty. I also got a fox coral and some of my frags I gave him back. A new 5 gal. bucket of sand too. OH and did I say it was free? Gotta like free. Cant beat the price.:D :D
