My T5 55g tank....and coral lightening

you also see alot of the best frags they have for sale right now are from SNIPERSPS(also RC totm winner i think) who uses 20K's for his tank

I don't want to sidetrack and turn this into 20k vs. 10k. Let's just say there is more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to lighting and leave it at that :)

Hopefully I'll be getting those 3000k lights soon. I'm real curious what kind of results I'll see. My concern is I'm going to cause some serious algae growth, better double up on the rowa.

Hopefully your nutrient levels are low enough that wont be the case.

hey mothra,

did you ask the retailer what colour the bulbs were like?

I saw some pictures of some lit 3000K T5 bulbs and they looked like incandescent bulbs. (extremely yellow) I dunno if that was the same colour as the ones you ordered.

I'm excited for you to get try them out!

I'm sure they will be yellow ~ orange in color.

By the way, since replacing my AB with B+ I am seeing some browning in the area under the B+ bulb (I only pulled one of the two AB bulbs out). My Atlantis cyphastrea has lost any hint of green, and my Greg Hiller pink prostrata has brown tips and some browning on the tissue starting to show up. I'll see if I can get a pic of that one as it's really noticeable with only part of the coral being under that bulb.

To be fair though, it could be due to the bulb having a year's+ worth of use on it (just a used spare I had laying around). Or it could be from stress due to the sudden change in lighting.

Well...I'm glad its him and not me as they are gonna look like extremely green, yellow, red.

I'm not really too worried about how they are going to look, that isn't the point. I'm more interested in what kind of results they might produce. These bulbs could turn out to be excellent prop tank bulbs if nothing else, but who knows that's the point.

People have to be open to new ideas in this hobby, a lot of them don't pan out, but some do and that's called progression.

You know I'm almost sorry I started this thread. People are gonna read this roller coaster of a thread and think T5 sucks. But it does'nt its a far cry from suckdom.

Like I said before I have LPS, ZOO's, 3 different clams, and SPS that love life under the T5's....Including a brillant pink monti, green monty, blue acro bottle brush, green horn coral, etc etc. I have coral lightening on a couple of SPS. Basically the brown tenuis w/ blue tips, a green acro and a bali green slimer. All three peices were placed fairly high in the tank with no acclimation what so ever.

I have in the last month lowered my daylight period and I can with out a doubt say that I'm experiencing better color on my green slimer and green acro. Is it because I've reduced the length of intense light...I cant say forsure...but what ever I'm doing its getting better. I also removed one SLR on a aquablue which I think will help and removed my SSB two weeks ago.

Tweek tweek tweek.

Cant find the camera right now....this week some time I will try and take some pics though. I'm pretty sure I'm seeing improvement though.

Ahhh...now I see why your corals have browned....first, 2 or 3 browning out of 10 isnt too bad so bump for T5's...but....no ACCLIMATION? -----simply expelled their zooxanthellae IMO------should have started them in the bottom third of your tank....now this may not explain anyone elses coral lightening or browning...but this certainly explains your browning dvan....

--Told you lowering the daylight bulb period would help...wait a week and then do it-----ah....went BB huh? now with all these changes theres no damn telling what was causing the issue----let us know dvan

HAS ANYONE TRIED ALL AQUABLUE(I was thinking about trying all AB, ATI brand,)?

I just REALLY looked at your WWW dvan....they dont look that bad at all....you need to lower the Green slimer a couple of inches and i expect you to see alot deeper Green...move it up and it will yellow...you should wait a few weeks to see change....i almost swear by that one

I am on a roll again..hold up....

Cant make up the one in the very top left....but it is undoubtedly bleached up...or just lightened...havent seen original or a close up to tel exactly what it is.....i suspect that is one you didnt acclimate.....The blue acro looks just fine....the more you lower it the deeper color you will experience.....i bet it likes some 20 K

I am starting to think that by looking at DVAN;s tank....the ones that happen to be a little "light" arent caused by the T5's, or if they are could be completely remedied by moving them down somewhat for a deeper color

What do you think about that DVAN?

Clams do look nice? See how deep their color is....try this...move em up 4 or 5 inches and watcht them turn a sky blue....all this is is placement..placement placement

Clams are sky blue and growing...on the bottom or elsewise they do great....and snaps I dont have any brown corals...it's the opposite remember.

sounds like someone is exited.....or maybe just a little too much caffine. count to 10 snaps...ahha

LMAO..dvan...i did have too much caffeine actually..thats funny ****.....they are all BROWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....JUST KIDDING
