My take on BACFM

I've been told that BAR stands for Broke @ss Reefers... :)

:eek1:

Common/cheap stuff doesn't mean it's not nice. I like green slimmer and xenia. If anybody doesn't want it, please throw them this way :D ..

Yeah I had a great time getting to meet some of the people that I see posting on the boards here. Steve was pretty nice to talk to and I admit one of the coolest things he had wasn't coral related (his cellphone credit card scanner haha). But I think the problem with the auctions is that people either didn't know what was going on or just didn't realize that these corals were going for a fraction of what they do online. Maybe projecting the images behind the auctioneer would have been more helpful. I ended up winning the war coral auction for only 80 bucks so I was really happy.

I agree with the "penny pinching" mentality of Nor-Cal reefers and the fact that it was scheduled on a very big event day with the pride parade and the bay bridge series. I didn't think that so much would have been available and next time I'll be sure to save up some cash before I go.

It was great to see everyone excited about captive propagation and just the fact that people are willing to spend money there means that they are voting with their dollar, so this takes some of the strain that collection puts on wild reefs.

I just dont understand why it was on a Sun? I can guarantee that Saturday would have been a much better day. Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun meeting new people as well as people who I've met before. That is always the best part for me.

From what I heard from Steve it's because the cost of the ballroom on Saturday is nearly 4 times what it is on Sunday. That Sunday just happened to be a tricky day, being at the end of the month, as well as on the same day that a couple of other events that were happening.

Completely true. I was told they charge so much more on Sat because lots of people want to have weddings on Sat. Supply and demand.

Ok.... so how many people were truly impressed that it was held in a Hilton ball room? I wasnt! it wasn't planed a week in advance, it didn't have to be held at the end of the month... it could have been held in the center of a mall for all that matters. A head count is important, but not critical, one company brings 1000 frags and another brings 100... its up to the vendor. If the price was door was free, people would have shown up in droves, I dont buy the argument that only people that pay 30.00 for a admission buy expensive corals without a complaint. I was glad I went, I went away thinking the vendors are not making killing, in fact just the opposite, if they walk away with a few grand they would be seriously lucky, sorry that's not a lot of money for the time energy and risk associated with the venue. the door money was probably more like 10k, but the cost of the room was half. No not a killing!

"Can someone explain to me how things like the CFM helps in this regard? Now I ask simply because it seems that the aquaculture market (atleast what I saw) tends to be with the high end/rarer market, and if that's the case then you're only conserving a small nitch of the ocean which might not really have much of an impact."

You didn't see everything then...
several of us venders at the event had "everyday" stuff. Most of my frags were off colonies that were brown and dying at some LFS,but I nurse back to health and been growing for 5 years! Bueatiful and hardy....but most attendies didn't want that stuff! just the "rare". I nearly sold out at the southern cali market, where I find more people actually do believe in buying farmed corals.

Jero, no I did see some of "common" stuff Heck most of what I got was common since I'm not that committed to fork out a c-note for a half inch square of something regardless to how pretty it looks :)

My comment was mainly directed towards the majority of what I saw though which was higher end, and what others mentioned about this being mostly geared towards those groups. Although again there was quite a bit of $10-15 frags (even cheaper near the end!)

I think that while there is definitely a "cheap" aspect to some of our buying trends, we (in Norcal) also have a very large community of people who just share corals, rare or not. I think this has an impact on our willingness to fork over cash.-Jim

I agree Jim, I mean hell when I started I got to know a particular LFS owner who literally gave me my first corals for free because some of parts died off and he couldn't sell them anymore. Not to mention with the frag swaps and even people who are willing to help you out. That we up here in NoCal don't really see corals as investments or potential money makers (with some exceptions). Just look at something as simple as Chaeto? Up here ask for some and it's free! Anywhere else in the country people will sell baggies of it for $10 and people are willing to buy it!

Hell our club has a program specifically designed for fragging and help distribute corals (not a frag swap either). Granted there is some xenia/kenya type stuff but lots of it isn't half bad stuff.

As a recipient of the BAR member generosity, thank you Crazyreefer, and frag swap participant this recent convert to SW agrees. This is a very generous group. That said it was nice to see all the new things at the BACFM. I will be happy to share pieces as they grow out but it was nice to be able to buy some new things.
