My tank pics

This is the first time I have posted any pictures of my tank which is a 20 g mixed tank. I have been in the hobby now for a few years, and I have really been taking it slowly, while doing research. Ultimately I want to plan out my dream tank so when I build my house, it will be in the plans. So far I have had a few fatalities, including my RBTA which was sucked up in the intake of my filter. I learned the hard way that the intakes need to be covered. A hard way to learn. Anyways, I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on how to keep the green star polyp under control. I am afraid it will take over my tank.
Any opinions and recommendations are highly valued and appreciated! Thanks

Thanks for the tips on getting the pics to work. :-)

I am also concerned about a thin film on top of the water. The water movement moves it out of the way, but it never really goes away. Kind of like a film of oil. Any thoughts?

You did it! That clown pic is awesome. :) The film you are referring to is built up proteins. That's the biggest thing to overcome in sump-less systems. My system is too sumpless so I battle that myself. The best remedy is to point your powerheads as to get vigorous movement of the water surface. That should allow the it to become suspended in the water column so your skimmer will have a better chance in removing it. You could put a surface skimmer on your Bak-Pak, but I've had mixed results when using those in the past. Aggressive flow towards the surface has always worked for me. ;)

I don't currently run any carbon. I don't currently have any slime, or really have had any in my tank that I know of. Unless you are referring to the film on the water. To be honest, I am still reviewing the pros/cons of running carbon in a tank. I had a particularly bad diatom bloom at one point, but that cleared up when I finally switched over to RO/DI.

Carbon is a good thing, imo. I run some in a hob aquaclear. It will help get rid of some of the organic buildup you have. That and more flow.

Thanks for the tip Brett. I have tried to stir up the surface water a bit more with another powerhead and it works a bit better. Hopefully I can switch over to a sump sometime soon, but that will require either a new drilled tank (ideally) or figuring out some way to get the water over the back. Then a new stand, new refugium or sump ...etc. etc. etc. Maybe I will just have to try another powerhead for now. :-)

Sorry, just saw this. Yeah, that's what GSP does. It grows like weeds. :D Frag it and take it to your LFS for credit or give it to some local reefer buddies. I'd keep it on a separate rock away from everthing else. It will travel. :)

Any thoughts on how to keep green star polyps under control or get them off other rocks that you don't want to turn green?

As for overflows, you can do a hang-on siphon box if you want to do a sump on this tank. They can be fussy though. I'd recommend waiting and get a tank with built-in overflows. Then you don't have to worry about a restart issue when you turn the pump off.

Here's a link to one anyway.

I looked into that at one point. I think Melev or someone had a video about making one that held its siphon even if the power went out. By that point, I would have to get a different stand to fit a sump in it. If I get a different stand, I might as well make it bigger to accomodate a larger tank, and if I get a larger tank, I might as well get one that is drilled. See my dilemma???? I think I am as far as I can go with this tank without upgrading, or adding more livestock-even then I am just about out of room. Just a matter of time now.

We all end up there somehow. Sounds like you're in need of an upgrade my friend. ;)
