My toadstool leather started out as a cute little thing.

Here it was on 11/30/06

Then in January we noticed "the baby"

You could help out and finish the cut so you are in control of where it goes when it comes off. Congrats!

I considered that, but am chicken to cut. I'm hoping to "catch"
it when it happens and maybe place the baby in a container.

Just cut away. It wont bother the coral. A quick swipe with a razor, thats all it takes. I was a little hesitant at first also. Just cut away it will be fine.

How "tough" is the flesh?

You're def gonna need a razorblade, most siccors won't cut it (at least mine won't)

These toadstools are extremely hardy, from my experience you can't hardly kill a healthy one. I just hacked up mine two weeks ago. Cut it back from approx 6" across down to a small stump. I got roughly 20 babies off of it and they were opening up within 24hrs and the mother was opening up within a week.

Since yours is in the display just try to make a clean slice with the blade and within a few days you won't even be able to tell that you cut it. Then you can either LIGHTLY rubberband the baby to a rock or rubble and put it somewhere you can see it and access it should it come loose from the rubberband.

I have placed the offspring in a plastic breeder. I have set
it on a piece of rubble in what looks like a logical place to attach.

Will it attach on its own or do I need to do more?

Congrats, it's a toadstool! give it about a week or so it should be attached.
