Well, I`m using Nikon D90 DSLR camera with M42 adapter, 2-3 macro rings and old but among the best, Helios 44-2.
Manual settings, manual focus, steady hand (or tripod if you prefer).
Tip for black background, it is the matter of focal length, if you use 2, as a setting on your optics, it will focus very small area in center of eye view. If you use 8 like I used in my photos, area is wider but than you have to set exposition to 1/8 or even 1/5 because of the light. These photos ARE NOT modified!
Everything is done with bare hand. Another tip for this, use aquarium glass for steady shot, lean optics on it. Macro rings are dependable on how subject is far from the glass.

I can`t imagine what will be output if I have better optics....
