Mystery Wrasse

Guys, I have been debating to add a mystery wrasse onto my 75 gallon tank, as I lost my female Anthias recently.

I currently have a pair of clown, a pair of Anthias, a male flame fairy wrasse, a rabbit fish, a meranulus wrasse, and a black tang. I really like mystery wrasse. I would like to find out the temperament of this particular wrasse. Is it agressive? Does it eat cleaner shrimp? My flame fairy wrasse is very timid, I surely don't want to get a bully wrasse.

My mystery wrasse is a very nice citizen with other wrasses and shrimp, but that is usually not their reputation. I've read posts indicating that mystery wrasses can be dominating and aggressive. I keep mine well fed, and he hasn't touched my cleaner shrimp....yet. Despite my success, I think it is a gamble with shrimp and clean up crew.

I added a small one just over an inch into my tank and it killed my coral banded shrimp. But other than that no problems

I wouldn't do it with the other wrasses you have. MW tend to be good citizens in the beginning, but over time as they get bigger and older they tend to be more aggressive especially with other wrasses, hogfish, etc.. There are no guarantees either way, but I would think it would be problematic and some point.

I have a mystery wrasse in a 210 reef. He did show aggression towards my flasher wrasse and to my candy hogfish. Over time the flasher didn't come out from hiding and I dont know what happened to the fish. Just vanished. The candy hogfish jumped out of tank to its death. This happened yesterday. I am assuming it was because of the mystery wrasse. So i would be concerned with the flame wrasse. Plus I had these problems in a larger tank then your 75 gallon. Other fish are fine in my tank. No problem with clowns, tangs, dartfish, chromis, and yellow corris wrasse, and lawnmower blenny.

Good luck with your decision

While I cant comment on other wrasses because my MW is the only wrasse I have in my 75 he is rather large and has not touched my cleaner shrimp sexy shrimp or any other CUC.

I have already called the LFS to get me a male golden Rhomboidalis wrasse. Did the research on this particular wrasse. It turns out to be a beautiful peaceful wrasse. Mystery Wrasse is jut too much a risk for my current tank. My flame wrasse was attacked by the female Anthias prior to this, now that female Anthias is gone, I need to make sure the new fish is peaceful.

I love my Mystery. I got him very small (probobly an inch or inch and a half) and now he is probobly around 3 or 3.5 inches. I could see him eating small shrimp but he does not bother my coral banded. I probobly wouldnt mix him with small fragile wrasses but he has never bothered a recently added cleaner wrasse.
