I am look at getting a mantis. I think that I would like one of the smaller species, like G. Smithii or N. Wenn. Would one of these be okay in a 10g glass tank or do I need to go acrylic? If so, what would be a good small tank..thanks

I have my n.wen in a small 5g refugium and he does great. I wouldn't worry about them breaking glass, I'm pretty sure its only the large O.Scylarrus have been recorded breaking aquarium glass.

LR with a hang on is what i had till got rid of it. just put a sponge over the intake so nothing gets sucked up. make sure to get at least 5x the filtration of the gallons an hours. (10gallon=at least 50gph.)

okay, so i think i'll probably go with N. wenn. Do I need any lighting or can I just set him close to a window. If I need lighting, I'll probably go with 4-5 watts/g. Is that too much?

N. wennerae are a shallow waer species that is common above 5 meters, so they can stand strong lights. But, I would go for a 18 watt 18" flourescentfixture which is enough for coraline and good viewing, but not too expensive. You will at least 2 pounds of LR though you can use like a pound of live rock and a few pounds of base rock (I got mine for $2/pound) Make sure some of the rock is big enough for the mantis to make a burrow. Substrate can be oolitic sand to pebble sized. I prefer sand personally. Some good pea-sized rocks for the mantis to close the door to its home are necessary.
