NAC7- mesh or needle wheel?

I have had my NAC7 for a couple of years now and I have been running the mesh wheel because it runs silently that way... not sure I'm getting the best performance though, as I have periodic overflow issues and I don't seem to get the skimmate that I used to... I have recently cleaned the skimmer and it gets no better-

Wondering if other NAC7 owners feel needle wheel performs better than mesh? The needle wheel works OK for me but it makes the skimmer LOUD!

Also, I have seen varying suggestions on depth- most think about 7" is good- do you find impeller choice affects optimum depth?

I am using a NAC7 with needle wheel sitting in 9 1/2" of water for my 125g DT and 30g sump. It is working very well and completely silent. I used to have the mesh wheel but the mesh deteriorated or disintegrated over time. I do think the needle wheel performs better and definitely more durable.
