Nano-Filter

PrangeWay

Duke of Monte Fisto
I've had a few problems with it.

1. It's flow almost stops/halts when a) the filter floss packs itself (due to current) tight against grate or b) I take out floss and it just randomly slows

2. The pump isn't removable. I know the manual shows how to do it, but mine is installed in such a way, it is not removable. Period. The wider ring on the output nozzle is inside the body, and the plate behind it which would allow it to be pulled out backwards is glued into place.

3. The opening for the skimmer teeth has a "slip" when the opening was cut so it's to wide for the tray to stay in place w/o moving it far to one side (leaving a gap on the other).

When it's running correclty it rocks, but I have to to almost daily maintainence on it to keep it so...

Any hints, advice, etc?

Thanks,
PW

1) put the floss in loosely and fluffed up, be sure to use a filter floss like ours or Eheims EhfiSynth and not some generic floss, their really is a difference. We also sell a coarser floss.

2) You will need to resolve that, at least every 6 months the pump will have to be cleaned as it will lock up with calcium otherwise. The filter will have to be removed to remove the pump but it shouldn't be that big of a deal. The key is to pull the tip off that sticks through the filter housing.

3) These cuts are made on jigs and should be fairly precise, I would try bending the tray out a bit so the parts that enter the filter are straight up and down.

1. I do use the Tuzne supplied Floss packed loosley. It tightly packs from the suckion I'd assume.

2. Probalby misunderstanding here.. The factory installation of the pump made removing it from the housing impossible... The direction nozzle comes off, but there is a wider ring on the output nozzle that's inside the housing, so it can't be removed.

3. I'll take a photo when I get home. But there is a definte visible slip in the housing cut so the "hangers" on the tray don't hold because the opening is to big.

I will check one out later in regards to the pump but they put it in with the unit finished so it has to be possible to get it out.

With regards to the floss, there are other variables that can affect the interval of changing the floss so I would suggest the best solution might be to use Macro Wadding the next time around and save the micro wadding for fine polishing.

I use a generic floss in mine with no problems, maybe I got lucky and got a good quality one. The filter works well, it just requires a little more maintenance due to its small volume. I have to replace the floss frequently, as it is an effective mechanical filter. I have considered trying a coarser media to extend its life. I have found Seachem Matrix Carbon to work well because it does not restrict the flow like finer medias.

The problem with the generic flosses is they tend to clump, the better filter flosses are combed so all the fibers orient in the same direction.

For the surface skimmer, this piece is held on by about 1mm of plastic so if the vertical supports are bent inward or outward even slightly it won't hold.

As for the pump, hopefully these photos will help-

I will admit, the floss that is included with the unit is better. I just wish my LFS would carry it. It is unfortunate that because of today's discount-minded consumer, price always takes priority over quality.

Eheim floss is also very good so if you can get that it works as well. The floss that comes with it is only $3.52 for 60gm. The Macrowadding which is coarser is $5.73 for 250gm. I think it is pretty cheap. From years of using Eheims I know that even though their floss was about $5.50 a box, that box lasted longer than the $2 bag of generic filter floss because it didn't clump up and clog so easy and you could rinse it and reuse it a couple times so the expense was the same really, just the hassle was a lot less.
