Nano reefers - i need your advice please

I am looking to start a 24G Nano tank in my bedroom and i am concerened about a few things and could use some friendly advice. I plan to have some mushrooms, one leather, and one clown fish. I do not have experience with skimmerless reefs this size.

1. It will be skimmerless - what type of water change schedule will i have to implement. can i be biweekly?

2. Will it be wise to run the carbon and the sponge trap 24/7 in this type of setup?

3. as i mentioned, livestock will be shrooms, one leather, and a clowfish...its not too much is it?

4. it's in my bedroom - is this thing loud?

5. how severe is the evaporation? how often will i have to top-off? (i plan on getting the deluxe model)

6. will i need additional powerheads?

7. can the heater fit in the back so that it is not intrusive?

8. is it difficult to control nitrates since no macroalgae is present.

okally dokally. well, all i can tell you is from experience so keep that in mind. I have a 20H that i've kept for about 8 months now. my algae is kept in control by snails and macro and have only had 2 corals (out about 20) die and that was because my tank was too young.

1. Skimmerless will be just fine, i do biweekly 10% changes
2. I run carbon, de-nitrate, some phosphate remover and sponge
3. i have 3 small fish and i could add one more, corals don't really add to the bioload
4. shouldn't be, make sure ur overflow or filter is quiet
5. evaporation depends on the surface area of the open top, temp, and any splash, i go through about 2 gallons over a week
6. depends on ur filter... i have a 304 plus a minijet 606
7. ?
8. i have razor caulpera in my display so i dunno.
good luck, hope i helped

1) I run a 24G JBJ nanocube with no skimmer, change 4 gallons every 3 weeks.
2) I run with carbon and sponge all the time, rinsing and replacing carbon when I do water changes
3) Not at all - I have a clown, a royal gramma, 2 green chromis, mushrooms, a colt leather, a few colonies of zoas, and a finger leather in mine
4) Not sure - are you getting one of the name brands? The JBJ Nanocube is not that loud at all.
5) I don't typically have to top off more than a few cups between water changes. With the close fitting hood and stock PC lighting, you won't evaporate that much.
6) I don't think you'll NEED additional, but many recommend replacing the pump for one with more power/flow. I have stock in mine, not really worried.
7) Yes
8) Not sure - I grow Macro in the front right corner of mine (I enjoy the appearance), which lowers my nitrates and allows me a more liberal water change policy. Not sure how this would differ without that macro.

jjirsa78..i plan on getting the JBJ unless someone convinces me that Aquapod is better product. which macro are u growing?

I have a 12 JBJ. 64watts PC 150 gph pump.
NO skimmer. EVER!!
Water changes every other month 2-3 gallons.
The whole back is covered in coraline.
Clown, yellow-tail dam, and blk blenny.
3 RTBA.
LS and LR
Just set it up and let it go.

I'm growing a softball sized chunk of caulerpa racemosa (that has to be trimmed OFTEN and likes to try to grow back towards the main rocks) and a bit of halimeda (steady grower, but not nearly as much pruning required)

I'm also a 24 JBJ owner.

I never run a skimmer. Just the JBJ add on surface skimmer.

Water changes 5 gallons weekly or bi-weekly depends how lazy i am.

I would upgrade the stock pump to a maxijet 1200.

I also threw away all the stock filtration media except the sponges. I now run SeaGel, Purigen, Seachem and half a sponge in chamber 1.
You will not need a heater in cali, my tank stays at 80.

I change pretty often so i dont experience much evap.

My current stock is 2 clowns, fire fish, goby, emerald crab, tiger pistol, yuma, 6 rics, cyano, green stars, alveapora, 2 hammers, and some zoo's

Great tank i love the JBJ setup and i think im gonna buy another 24!

ive had my 24 nano up for about 8 months, with no problems...i do a water change every 2 weeks, top off every 3 days, and feed my 3 fish once a day...i have numerous corals in it, and its not loud at all... good luck

I have a 24g aqua pod w/ 70w hqi (so no lid) and I am putting a aqua C romera on the back with no mods.
I am also adding a hang on the back refuge with cheato.
(both of these will take up the entire back space)
I do 5g weekly water changes
I top off about 2 gallons per week
and my tank atm makes almost no sound. But I might have to revise when the skimmer and refuge are installed

I have been using Tropic Marin Pro Reef and its the best! Since i started using it about 2 month ago i have not added ca or alk. I used to use B-Ionic.

1. i have the cassette skimmer mod with weekly water changes..

2. i run carbon and sponge 24/7

3. i have 2 maroon clowns...3 tiny anemones, pom pom xenia, zoos, gsp, elephant ear shrooms, regular greens shrooms, acan lords, fire shrimp, one green chromis...and my bioload isnt that bad...i guess its because of the weekly water changes..i use catalina water btw..

4. this is also in my bedroom and it isnt loud at all

5. i have the deluxe model and water doesnt evaporate that much at all...1/2 inch in a week for me?

6. i run a rio as my pump but i forgot which one...its powerful enough...just make sure you have a Y-spray bar that points in the right directions so there is full circulation

7. my heater fits perfectly.

8. my tip...if you are crafty then make another inlet at the bottom left...

ill post pictures later if you want to see?

I have a 12 gal nano cube, until about 2 hours ago it was always skimmerless...I decided to try the skimmer to add volume and allow for a heavier bioload. . . I don't have experience w/ skimmers really though, hence why I am on the boards... anyways you should go to the Nano Forum if you have more ?'s and also there is nano-reef.com, though I havent spent much time there myself, its another resource if you ever need. it GL!
